Senior Developer, Authentication Enablement
1Password is growing. We’ve surpassed $400M in ARR and we’re continuing to accelerate, earning a spot on the Forbes Cloud 100 for four years in a row and teaming up with iconic partners like Oracle Red Bull Racing.
About 1Password
At 1Password, we’re building the foundation for a safe, productive digital future. Our mission is to unleash employee productivity without compromising security by ensuring every identity is authentic, every application sign-in is secure, and every device is trusted. We innovated the market-leading enterprise password manager and pioneered Unified Access Management, a new cybersecurity category built for the way people and AI agents work today. As one of the most loved brands in cybersecurity, we take a human-centric approach in everything from product strategy to user experience. Over 180,000 businesses, from Fortune 100 leaders to the world’s most innovative AI companies, trust 1Password to help their teams securely adopt the SaaS and AI tools they need to do their best work.
If you're excited about the opportunity to contribute to the digital safety of millions, to work alongside a team of curious, driven individuals, and to solve hard problems in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, then we want to hear from you. Come join us and help shape a safer, simpler digital future.
We're looking for a Senior Developer to join our Authentication Enablement team. Our mission is to let people, families and businesses unlock 1Password and reach their information safely and simply, with authentication that stays in the background. Every 1Password app establishes its session with our servers through the service this team owns, whether the user signs in with a password and Secret Key, SSO, a passkey, MFA or a trusted device.
We're moving authentication out of our monolith and into an independent service with its own datastores, so sign-in can scale and stay available independently of the rest of the platform. The service carries production traffic throughout, so the migration runs endpoint by endpoint and table by table, with weighted rollouts, consistency checks and tested rollback. As a Senior Developer you'll own pieces of that migration from design through rollout and into production support.
How we’re using AI today
Our Engineering, Product, and Design teams are thoughtfully integrating AI across the full software and product development lifecycle to move faster without sacrificing quality or security. In practice, that looks like engineers using AI-assisted coding tools to accelerate reviews and catch bugs earlier, product managers synthesizing user research at scale, and designers rapidly prototyping and iterating with AI-generated mockups. We approach AI the same way we approach security: with clear principles, human accountability at every consequential decision point, and rigorous evaluation before anything ships to customers.
This is a remote opportunity within Canada and the US.
What we're looking for:
Significant experience building backend services in Go, with a track record of owning medium-to-large projects from design through production.
Experience with distributed systems and data: event streaming or change data capture with Kafka, relational databases such as MySQL, and changing a system while it serves production traffic.
Working knowledge of authentication protocols such as OAuth and OIDC, WebAuthn and passkeys, or MFA, or experience building other security-sensitive systems.
A quality mindset: you find the gaps in test coverage, write tests that catch regressions, and document your work so others can review, operate and extend it.
Clear communication: you make your project's progress and risks visible, and you work through requirements with partner teams.
You give constructive feedback in reviews and design discussions, and you help build shared ownership on the team.
Bonus points for:
Experience moving functionality out of a monolith.
Redis or other session stores, or DynamoDB.
Familiarity with SRP or other password-authenticated key exchange protocols.
On-call and incident response for services with strict availability targets.
What you can expect:
Own the delivery of medium-to-large migration projects, such as moving the MFA, SSO and device-enrollment flows to the new service and moving the data behind them table by table.
Build each move to be safe in production: SLOs and monitoring for every endpoint, weighted rollouts, consistency checks and a tested rollback path.
Make and document the technical decisions within your projects, balancing short-term delivery with long-term maintainability.
Contribute to the team's roadmap by identifying technical opportunities and risks up to six months out.
Raise the quality bar by finding lapses in code quality and gaps in testing, and by keeping the team's documentation current.
Work with the Authorization, Identity Services and Security teams, and with the product teams whose features depend on authentication, to turn requirements into actionable work.
Hold AI-assisted work on security-critical code to the same bar as everything else: human judgment, careful validation and small, reviewable changes.
Join the on-call rotation for a tier 0 service.

How we work with AI
We are committed to leveraging cutting-edge technology—including AI—to achieve our mission. We also understand that thinking critically about AI in its current forms will help us create better solutions for our customers and ourselves with its future forms, which will help us continue to close the gap between security and privacy and achieve our mission. We want team members at all levels to take the approach of actively learning AI best practices, identifying opportunities to apply AI in meaningful ways, and driving innovative solutions in their daily work. Embracing the future of AI isn't just encouraged—it's an essential part of how we will be successful at 1Password.
This approach extends to our hiring process—candidates are welcome to use AI tools responsibly and thoughtfully during the application process. To us, this means we do ask that you join live interviews without using AI tools so we can get to know how you communicate, solve problems, and collaborate with others.
