Senior Software Developer, Mid-Market
7shifts is a scheduling and payroll platform designed to help restaurant teams thrive. With an easy-to-use app and industry-specific solutions, 7shifts saves time, reduces errors, and helps keep costs in check for over 55,000 restaurants. Our mission is to simplify team management and improve performance for restaurants, with a long-term vision of creating a thriving restaurant industry through the power of connected & engaged teams.
As a Senior Software Developer, Mid-Market at 7shifts, you'll be one of the founding engineers on our mid-market squad — the team responsible for building the foundational systems that serve restaurant groups with real complexity: multiple locations, layered permissions, and the need for rollup visibility across their entire operation. You'll report to the Sr. Director of Engineering and work closely with a product counterpart, the data team, and a Director of Software Development.
The work is greenfield in the places that count. You'll define the data structures that power rollup reporting for multi-location operators and design a permissions and authorization system that properly supports role-based access control (RBAC) at scale, going meaningfully beyond what exists today. Within 6 months, the expectation is a beta of rollup reports delivered across a few dimensions and the architectural path for the permissions system defined and in early development. This is not a backlog of tickets. It's a chance to shape systems used every day by over 1.5 million restaurant workers.
What you’ll do:
- Design and build the data structures and pipelines that power rollup reporting for multi-location restaurant groups, owning the work from schema design through beta delivery
- Architect and lead early development on a new permissions and authorization system, mapping the migration path from what exists today and sequencing the transition safely
- Partner with your product counterpart to sequence, estimate, and prioritize across two foundational workstreams, surfacing tradeoffs and risks early
- Communicate architectural decisions and status clearly to your team, the data team, and leadership, including when the plan needs to change
- Work alongside AI agents as part of how you build: spec-driven development, agentic harnesses for code generation and debugging, and deliberate agent use in your daily workflow
- Raise the technical bar of the squad through code reviews, design discussions, and hands-on guidance for teammates
What you bring:
- 7–10 years of experience building production software, including work where data modeling or permissions and authorization were central to how the system worked, not just adjacent to it
- You've owned systems end to end: from technical design through delivery, support, and iteration, making real decisions when things broke or needed to change
- A track record of turning ambiguous, complex problems into clear, maintainable solutions without waiting for everything to be defined
- Comfort in large, evolving codebases, with the judgment to improve them incrementally while still shipping progress
- Strong technical judgment when balancing speed, quality, performance, and long-term maintainability, especially against a concrete timeline
- Clear communication and the ability to work effectively across engineering, product, and data partners
- Experience mentoring developers or leading technical discussions that raise the quality of decisions across a team
It’d be even cooler if you had:
- Hands-on experience with data lake or warehouse tooling such as Snowflake, BigQuery, or AWS equivalents
- Background in a domain where accuracy, reliability, and real-time data were business-critical
