Role Summary
Are you a business-minded engineering leader with a passion for building AI-native software that powers healthcare at scale? AdvancedMD is seeking an experienced Sr. Director, Software Engineering to lead multiple scrum teams across a product line or several add-on modules. In this role, you’ll provide both technical and business leadership, co-owning the product line P&L, the technical roadmap, and the quality strategy rather than simply managing delivery.
You’ll play a pivotal role in driving AI-native delivery (AIDLC) and deploying AI features and agents to production with reliability, cost control, and observability. Partnering closely with Product, Design, DevOps, and executive stakeholders, you’ll ensure speed is always paired with quality, and AI adoption is always paired with cost discipline and compliance.
This is an exciting opportunity to join a collaborative, metrics-driven organization where your expertise in engineering leadership, AI adoption, and quality automation will have a direct impact on clients, patients, and the business. If you’re a leader who treats engineering as a business and technology function, we’d love to hear from you.
Essential Job Duties:
- Co-own the product line P&L with Product, optimizing cost of revenue, tech debt, and architecture adherence
- Own technical roadmap prioritization and act as product owner for tech initiatives
- Define and report system-level and product-level success metrics
- Lead AIDLC adoption across all scrum teams, embedding AI in planning, design, coding, review, testing, and release
- Own AI tooling strategy, including coding assistants, agents, and MCP-based integrations
- Govern AI use through guardrails, security, HIPAA/PHI compliance, and human-in-the-loop standards
- Deploy AI features and agents to production, and track AI unit economics (cost to serve vs. revenue)
- Own the product line QE and automation strategy, including escape-defect targets, release planning, and readiness
- Lead, mentor, and grow managers and senior engineers
- Coordinate release planning and lead impact analysis across scrum teams
- Develop department strategy, budgets, policies, and procedures
- Institutionalize OKRs and a metrics-based culture
- Run scrum-of-scrums as Single Initiative Leader for cross-team solutions
- Own minimum operating standards for the product line
- Manage COGS vendor and partner relationships, including procurement
- Report status, risks, and outcomes to executives on a fixed monthly cadence
Qualifications:
- 12+ years in software engineering, including 6+ years leading managers and multi-team organizations
- Experience owning or co-owning a P&L or product-line budget
- Hands-on implementation of AIDLC or an AI-assisted SDLC at team scale
- AI tooling experience (e.g., Claude Code, Copilot, agent frameworks, MCP)
- Track record deploying AI/LLM capabilities to production at scale
- Strong QE and test automation background
- Vendor management and cost-of-revenue optimization experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field
- Healthcare IT, EHR, or regulated-industry experience preferred
- Advanced degree preferred
What Will Make us LOVE You
- Business-and-Technology Ownership – Acts as a co-owner of the P&L and roadmap, not just an engineering manager
- AI-Native Leadership – Drives AI adoption across planning, coding, testing, and release, with strong guardrails for security and HIPAA/PHI compliance
- Quality with Speed – Pairs fast delivery with automation-first practices, lower escape defects, and a low change failure rate
- Metrics-Based Culture – Builds OKRs and dashboards that make progress, cost, and risk visible to every team
- Leadership Development – Grows managers and senior engineers and builds ready-now successors for key roles
- Cross-Functional Partnership – Aligns Product, Design, DevOps, and executives on goals and tradeoffs
