Job Description

The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) is implementing a multibillion-dollar Comprehensive Modernization Program (CompMod) under the AECOM/NYCHA Program Management team. The program encompasses comprehensive renovations and modernization of existing NYCHA residential developments throughout New York City, including apartment interiors, kitchens and bathrooms, common areas, building systems, and associated infrastructure improvements.

We are seeking an experienced Senior Interior Designer / Design Project Manager to support the planning, design development, and implementation of interior architectural improvements across multiple NYCHA developments. The successful candidate will work closely with the AECOM Program Management team, NYCHA stakeholders, architects, engineers, design-build contractors, and construction management teams to ensure design quality, consistency, constructability, and successful project delivery.

The position requires strong interior design and project management experience, with an emphasis on residential renovations, design coordination, construction documentation, material selections, and construction administration.

Responsibilities

  • Performs various management, leadership, and coordination responsibilities associated with interior design and architectural renovation projects.
  • Has responsibility for organizing, executing, and coordinating interior design assignments from conceptual design through construction completion.
  • Provides technical oversight of the design-builder's interior architectural design, including apartment renovations, kitchens, bathrooms, common areas, finishes, fixtures, and associated building improvements.
  • Reviews architectural drawings, specifications, material selections, and design submissions for compliance with project requirements, applicable codes, and established design standards.
  • Coordinates with architects, engineers, consultants, design-build contractors, and construction management teams to ensure integrated design solutions.
  • Manages multiple design assignments, establishing priorities and monitoring schedules, deliverables, and project milestones.
  • Provides recommendations regarding materials, finishes, fixtures, and design alternatives, considering durability, maintainability, constructability, cost, and long-term performance.
  • Participates in design reviews, technical meetings, and coordination workshops with NYCHA, AECOM, and project stakeholders.
  • Reviews design-build contractor submissions, shop drawings, material samples, and requests for information to support design intent and project requirements.
  • Identifies potential design conflicts and constructability concerns and coordinates timely resolution with the appropriate project stakeholders.
  • Assists with the development and implementation of design standards, guidelines, and quality-control procedures across multiple projects.
  • Supports construction administration activities, including site observations, design clarifications, material approvals, and final inspections.
  • Maintains effective working relationships with internal project teams, clients, consultants, contractors, and vendors.
  • Works independently on technical and design-related matters, exercising professional judgment within established project objectives.
  • Provides guidance and coordination to the team and other technical staff, as required.
  • Works under general supervision, with assignments established through broad project objectives, schedules, and program requirements.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • BA/BS in Interior Design, Interior Architecture, Architecture, or a related field, plus 8 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Experience managing interior design projects from conceptual development through construction and final installation.
  • Experience working on residential, multifamily housing, or occupied-building renovation projects.
  • Experience coordinating with architects, engineers, contractors, consultants, and project stakeholders.
  • Experience reviewing architectural drawings, construction documents, specifications, material selections, and design submissions.
  • Experience managing project schedules, budgets, deliverables, and client expectations.
  • Experience supporting design-build projects and multidisciplinary design teams.
  • Experience with kitchen and bathroom renovations, interior finishes, fixtures, and residential modernization.
  • Experience coordinating construction administration activities, including shop drawings, RFIs, material submittals, and site observations.

  • Strong organizational, communication, leadership, and project management skills.

  • Experience working with NYC public agencies, housing authorities, or large institutional clients.
  • Familiarity with NYC Building Codes, accessibility requirements, and applicable residential design standards.
