Job Description
About the Role
AECOM is looking for talented and motivated graduates to join our Traffic Modelling team in Exeter. Our Traffic Engineering and Modelling teams work on a diverse range of projects focused on creating safer, more efficient and sustainable transport networks for communities.
As a Graduate Traffic Modeller, you’ll use analytical and problem-solving skills to understand how people and vehicles move through transport networks and help our clients develop effective solutions to transport challenges. You’ll work alongside experienced modellers and other technical professionals in multidisciplinary teams, gaining practical experience on live projects while developing your technical knowledge and professional skills.
The role is suited to graduates who enjoy working with data, analysing problems and understanding how different factors interact. You do not need to have an engineering background; we’re interested in candidates who can demonstrate strong logic, reasoning, numerical and analytical ability, together with a genuine interest in transport and modelling.
What You’ll Do
As a Graduate Traffic Modeller, you’ll be supported by experienced colleagues who will provide guidance and mentoring as you develop your technical and professional skills. You’ll receive structured training and work on live projects, building your knowledge of transport modelling and the tools and techniques used to understand and assess transport networks.
Your initial responsibilities will typically include:
- Supporting the development and application of transport and traffic models.
- Collecting, processing and analysing transport and traffic data.
- Using data and modelling outputs to understand existing and future transport conditions.
- Supporting the development and testing of transport scenarios and potential solutions.
- Preparing technical analysis, reports, presentations and other project deliverables.
- Attending meetings, workshops and site visits where appropriate.
- Working collaboratively with colleagues, clients and other technical professionals.
- Developing your understanding of transport modelling methodologies, assumptions and best practice.
You’ll receive training in relevant modelling and analytical software, which may include LinSig, TRANSYT, VISSIM and other transport modelling and data analysis tools, depending on project requirements.
As your experience and confidence grow, you’ll take on increasing responsibility for technical tasks and project deliverables, with opportunities to contribute to projects from inception through to completion.
You may gain experience across a variety of projects, including:
- Traffic and transport modelling
- Microsimulation
- Junction and network modelling
- Network analysis and optimisation
- Traffic impact assessments
- Development and testing of transport scenarios
- Forecasting and analysis of future transport conditions
- Sustainable transport and active travel schemes
- Public transport and bus priority schemes
- Traffic management
- Road and street network studies
- Feasibility studies and options appraisal
- Major transport and infrastructure projects
You’ll also have opportunities to work alongside our wider Traffic Engineering, Highways and Transportation teams, providing exposure to different aspects of transport planning and infrastructure. This multidisciplinary environment will help you develop a broad understanding of how modelling and analysis support the planning and delivery of transport projects.
Qualifications
- A 2:1 (or equivalent) degree or above in a quantitative, analytical or relevant subject such as Mathematics, Physics, Geography, Economics, Engineering, Transport Planning, Data Science, Statistics or a related discipline.
- A relevant Master’s degree would be advantageous but is not essential.
- Genuine interest in transport, traffic modelling and the development of safe, efficient and sustainable transport networks.
- Strong logical reasoning, analytical and numerical skills, with the ability to interpret and evaluate information and identify patterns and relationships.
- An ability to approach problems systematically and develop logical solutions.
- Basic proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Good written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical information clearly.
- Ability to structure and prioritise work effectively while contributing to the wider team.
- Ability to work collaboratively and independently, demonstrating initiative, focus and a willingness to learn.
- Enthusiastic, technically minded and motivated, with ambition and drive.
- Commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
- Enthusiasm for being based in Exeter and developing your career within our South West team, while contributing to transport and infrastructure projects across a diverse range of locations.
