Senior Asset Manager, Battery Energy Storage

The Senior Asset Manager is responsible for maximizing the operational, financial, and strategic value of a regional portfolio of utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and hybrid BESS + Solar operating assets. This role integrates support of field oversight and operational optimization, commercial strategy, and financial value creation to ensure assets consistently perform at or exceed their investment thesis and contractual and regulatory obligations.
The successful candidate will serve as the primary operational leader for their assigned portfolio, optimizing asset performance, and driving continuous improvement initiatives across the portfolio. This position requires strong commercial acumen, proven leadership capabilities, and expertise in utility-scale renewable energy and storage operations. The role reports directly to the Vice President of Asset Management.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the overall financial performance (P&L) of assigned BESS and Solar + BESS operating assets, including revenue optimization, expense management, and variance analysis against budget and investment thesis;
- Develop and manage annual asset budgets and long-term financial forecasts (3-5 years) for the portfolio, incorporating market dynamics, regulatory changes, and operational improvements;
- Manage adherence to compliance obligations for operating agreements including PPAs, credit agreements, company operating agreements, leases, easements, O&M agreements, long-term services agreements and compliance agreements;
- Support cash management, forecasts and liquidity planning in collaboration with Portfolio Finance;
- Partner with Operations, O&M providers, and Performance Engineering to monitor and improve asset performance, utilizing data systems and historical operational data;
- Establish and track Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) including availability, uptime, state of charge, round trip efficiency, financial health metrics, and other asset-specific metrics;
- Identify performance gaps and anomalies, implementing corrective actions and continuous improvement initiatives to maximize energy generation and revenue;
- Ensure adherence to operational protocols, ISO and regulatory standards, and environmental compliance requirements across all assets in the portfolio;
- Support contract review, amendments, contract renewals, and new agreement negotiations in coordination with Legal, Finance, and Development teams;
- Create and maintain comprehensive internal asset performance reports, external stakeholder reports, and executive dashboards.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Finance, Economics, Business Administration, Mathematics, or related quantitative discipline;
- Minimum 5-10 years of professional experience in asset management or a related field with utility-scale renewable energy or energy storage projects;
- Experience with ISO/RTO market participation and regulatory compliance;
- Proficiency in Excel, Power Point, Word, and Microsoft Office suite;
- Strong project finance knowledge including understanding of debt covenants, tax equity structures, and investor reporting requirements;
- Excellent communication skills and ability to translate complex information for diverse audiences;
- Strong quantitative skills with ability to conduct complex financial and performance analysis;
- Attention to detail, commitment to continuous improvement, and focus on metrics and KPI management;
- Ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment and manage multiple competing priorities.
Compensation and Location
Salary: A base salary commensurate with experience.
Bonus: An annual bonus will be awarded based on individual performance and the overall success of the business.
