At BETA Technologies, we apply our intellectual curiosity, passion for aviation, and commitment to sustainability toward a shared mission of revolutionizing electric aviation. Regardless of the position one holds, each team member brings their talent and desire to positively impact the environment and lives of others in a refreshing, vibrant, and inclusive culture.

The Lead Embedded Software Engineer for Airborne Software will apply their deep knowledge of RTCA DO-178C, best practices for real-time safety-critical embedded software development, technical leadership experience, and embedded C mastery to directly contribute to and lead a team of developers and testers to specify, architect, design, implement, integrate, test and analyze the embedded software for BETA’s airborne systems. The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge of embedded software development, from bare-metal board bring-up and microcontroller timing and execution characteristics to comprehensive software specification and design methods and techniques. The lead embedded software engineer is responsible for leading a project team chartered with developing and testing robust and reliable software to achieve the highest level of safety-criticality in the industry.

How you will contribute to revolutionizing electric aviation:

  • Analyze system architecture, functionality, hardware specifications, and safety requirements to lead the design, integration, test and analysis of an embedded software project
  • Coordinate with adjacent disciplines such as systems engineering, safety engineering, configuration management, quality assurance, and airworthiness for the successful certification of an embedded software project
  • Work with project engineers to understand business drivers to identify feature delivery timelines, staffing and equipment needs, and releases to support hardware/software integration, system integration, iron bird and aircraft level testing
  • Establish appropriate work assignments, feature sets, and deadlines to execute a software project efficiently while meeting business goals
  • Prepare and present project status reports depicting the velocity of execution of the software project team, identifying dependencies and constraints, and addressing certification considerations to both BETA leadership and certifying authorities
  • Create and maintain certification documentation including software plans, standards, and associated life cycle data, as well as participate in certification audits/reviews
  • This is a hands-on position, and the Lead Embedded Software Engineer is expected to lead by example by contributing directly to the development and testing of the embedded software, including requirements management, architecture and design, and test development
  • Mentor junior engineers by training them on DO-178C objectives, activities and outputs; real-time and safety-critical embedded software best-practices; and integration and troubleshooting methods and techniques

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related degree from an accredited university
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in real-time embedded software development for safety-critical systems
  • Expert level knowledge and experience with the activities and outputs required for DO-178C Level A compliance
  • Strong experience and expertise in the full software life cycle for aerospace embedded software
  • Excellent team communication and collaboration skills
  • Ability to effectively organize and lead a team of up to 20 software engineers
  • Experience with Stage of Involvement reviews and communication with FAA personnel and DERs
  • Experience with RTCA DO-330 tool qualification objectives, activities and outputs
  • Experience with RTCA DO-331 model-based development objectives, activities, and outputs
  • Candidates are encouraged to apply even if they don’t meet all minimum qualifications

Above and Beyond Qualifications:

  • Deep technical knowledge of best practices for safety-critical embedded software, common communication devices and protocols, and multi-core processors
  • Advanced software engineering techniques such as model-based software engineering, software product line engineering, and use of formal methods
  • Experience with embedded software for electric motor control, battery management systems and/or flight control systems
  • Experience with project management activities, such as estimating, tracking, and reporting work; traditional, kanban, and scrum experience
