About the Role
The Senior Revenue Accountant is a critical executor role responsible for applying ASC 606 revenue recognition standards across complex SaaS subscription and usage-based billing scenarios. You will use AI tools to accelerate contract analysis and variance investigation while focusing your expertise on evaluating transaction substance, identifying revenue recognition risks, and ensuring accurate financial reporting. Working closely with cross- functional teams, such as AR, Billing, Revenue Operations, and Deal Desk, you'll drive operational excellence in how Billtrust recognizes and reports revenue.
This role sits at the intersection of finance, legal, and operations, requiring both technical accounting depth and strong communication skills. You'll maintain internal controls that ensure revenue transactions are correctly classified and recorded, support audit activities, and help build process documentation and playbooks that scale our revenue accounting function as the team grows. Success means catching revenue recognition issues before they impact financials, escalating complex scenarios to Management with clear analysis, and continuously improving how we execute.
Revenue Recognition & Technical Accounting
• Apply ASC 606 standards to customer contracts across multiple revenue streams (subscriptions, usage-based billing, professional services), identifying performance obligations and appropriate recognition timing.
• Analyze and document revenue treatment for non-standard contracts, identifying and escalating edge cases to Management for judgement calls.
• Use AI tools to streamline contract review workflows, flagging key commercial terms and revenue-impacting provisions for review.
• Perform technical research on complex accounting scenarios and document conclusions with support for future reference and audit.
Contract Review & Revenue Analysis Support
• Coordinate with Deal Desk, Billing, and Sales to gather contract terms and commercial parameters needed for revenue accounting.
• Apply pre-revenue and post-revenue analysis to validate billing-to-revenue reconciliation, identifying timing or classification mismatches.
• Work with Management and business systems to scope how system changes (billing model updates, contract term changes) affect revenue recognition.
Month-End Close & Fluctuation Analysis
• Perform month-end revenue close activities including revenue cutoff, accrual validation, and intercompany elimination.
• Conduct variance analysis comparing actual revenue to forecast and prior periods, escalating material variances to management with root-cause identification.
• Prepare flux commentary on revenue line items for internal reporting and management review.
• Other duties as assigned.
Internal Controls & Audit Support
• Maintain revenue-related controls, documenting control design and remediation where needed.
• Respond to external audit requests with supporting documentation and detailed explanations of revenue treatment.
• Follow and continuously improve existing revenue accounting processes and procedures.
• Document revenue accounting playbooks and decision trees to support team onboarding as the function scales.
• Contribute to knowledge transfer as the revenue accounting team grows, helping build repeatable processes.
Internal & External Reporting
• Prepare revenue schedules and disclosures for monthly and annual close packages.
• Ensure revenue reporting aligns with GAAP presentation requirements and materiality thresholds.
Required Skills:
• 4+ years of experience in revenue accounting, ASC 606 revenue recognition, or related technical accounting roles (public company, Big 4, or growth-stage SaaS preferred).
• Deep understanding of ASC 606 standards and ability to evaluate transaction substance and identify revenue recognition complexities.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate complex accounting concepts clearly to non- finance stakeholders.
• Meticulous attention to detail, with strong skills in identifying discrepancies and supporting corrections.
• Ability to escalate appropriately to management, knowing when issues require judgment calls beyond individual execution.
• Demonstrated ability to use AI tools to accelerate personal workflows (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, document analysis tools).
• Proficiency in Excel and ERP systems (NetSuite or similar), with comfort learning new accounting tools quickly.
Preferred Skills:
• Big 4 accounting or public company revenue accounting experience.
• CPA certification or progress toward CPA.
• Experience in SaaS or subscription revenue models with usage-based billing components.
• Experience with revenue automation tools or AI-assisted accounting workflows.
• Familiarity with cross-functional revenue processes (Deal Desk, Billing Operations,
AR/Collections).
The expected base salary range for this position is $86,000 - $105,000 annually.
