About the role:
The MongoDB Application DBA is accountable for designing, optimizing, and operating MongoDB databases that power mission-critical applications. This role sits at the intersection of application development and database engineering, ensuring that data models, queries, indexes, and deployment patterns are efficient, scalable, and aligned with business requirements. The Application DBA partners closely with developers, DevOps, and infrastructure teams to deliver high-performance, secure, and resilient MongoDB environments.
How You'll make an impact:
Database Design & Development:
- Collaborate with application architects to design optimal MongoDB data models (schema design, document structure, embedding vs. referencing).
- Review and optimize queries, aggregations, and indexing strategies.
- Implement schema versioning, data migrations, and refactoring strategies.
- Helps developers with MongoDB best practices, patterns, and anti-patterns.
Performance & Optimization:
- Monitor and tune query performance, index usage, and execution plans.
- Analyze slow queries using Profiler, Explain Plans, and performance metrics.
- Optimize sharding strategies, partitioning, and data distribution.
- Conduct capacity planning and workload forecasting.
Operations & Administration
- Manage MongoDB clusters (standalone, replica sets, sharded clusters) in on-prem or Atlas environments.
- Perform backup/restore, disaster recovery planning, and failover testing.
- Ensure high availability, replication health, and cluster stability.
- Implement and maintain monitoring (Atlas, Ops Manager, Prometheus, PagerDuty, Grafana, ELK, PMM etc.).
- Security & Compliance
- Configure and enforce authentication, authorization, and role-based access control.
- Implement encryption at rest and in transit, auditing, and compliance controls.
- Enable secure deployment patterns and vulnerability remediation.
Troubleshooting & Support
- Diagnose and resolve issues related to:
- Replication lag
- Locking and contention
- Memory/CPU bottlenecks
- Storage performance

- Proficiency with MongoDB Atlas, Ops Manager, or Cloud Manager.
- Experience with Linux, shell scripting, and system-level performance tuning.
- Familiarity with programming languages commonly used with MongoDB (Node.js, Python, Java).
- Knowledge of networking, storage, and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP).
- Experience supporting high-volume, business-critical production systems.
Soft Skills
- Strong communication and collaboration with developers and cross-functional teams.
- Analytical mindset with a focus on performance and reliability.
- Ability to work in fast-paced, distributed environments.

- Background in SQL databases and migration from relational to NoSQL.
- Experience in monitoring 24/7 highly available production environments.
- Experience in gaming, betting, fintech, payments, e-commerce, or other transaction-intensive industries.
Success Measures
- Success in this role will be measured by:
- Improved database and application performance.
- Reduced query latency and resource consumption.
