Job Description

SUMMARY

The Carrier Shipment team is building a strategic, carrier-neutral and contract-neutral platform that serves as the system of record for freight movement execution across the transportation ecosystem. As an Engineer III on the Carrier Shipment team, you will contribute as an experienced engineer who delivers reliable, high-quality outcomes while helping lead the team toward sound technical decisions. This role requires strong hands-on engineering capability across Java-based services, APIs, messaging systems, and Enterprise Cloud Platform, along with active participation in design reviews, solution discussions, code reviews, and production support. Engineer III is expected to influence team execution beyond assigned tasks by improving system design, strengthening operational excellence, supporting peers, and collaborating closely with Technical Product Managers, Architects, and adjacent engineering teams. The ideal candidate brings strong business understanding, technical depth, ownership, and a collaborative mindset to build scalable, reliable, observable, and high-quality software solutions that deliver measurable business value.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the design, development, testing, and maintenance of the Carrier Shipment platform, including Java-based backend services, GraphQL and REST APIs, and event-driven integrations.
  • Drive product, design, and architectural discussions to define scalable, reliable, and secure solutions that align with business priorities, platform standards, and long-term technical direction.
  • Collaborate with Technical Product Managers, Architects, and partner engineering teams to translate business workflows into technical plans and high-quality software delivery.
  • Guide troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and resolution of complex application defects, integration issues, performance bottlenecks, and production incidents.
  • Design and maintain integrations with upstream and downstream systems using APIs, messaging platforms, and event-driven architecture patterns that support resilience and scalability.
  • Perform and lead code reviews, provide constructive feedback to peers and junior engineers, and uphold coding standards, security requirements, architectural standards, and Engineering Principles.
  • Enable CI/CD practices, support deployment automation, improve release quality, and help the team deliver changes to production safely and frequently.
  • Improve platform reliability, scalability, observability, telemetry, and operational resilience by defining monitoring practices, responding to incidents, and reducing recurring operational friction.
  • Mentor engineers in resilient design patterns, operational support practices, Engineering Principles, and effective use of AI-powered tools for code generation, testing, and analysis.
  • Lead the evolution of the Carrier Shipment domain model by guiding data modeling, API design, workflow definition, integration planning, and technical decision-making across solution areas.
  • Identify and drive automation, modernization, technical debt reduction, security improvements, and engineering productivity initiatives across the platform.

Establish and communicate a near-to-mid-term technical vision for assigned systems, translate that vision into actionable plans, and influence delivery across the team and adjacent engineering groups.
