Crop Insurance Underwriting Intern

Farmers Mutual Hail (located in West Des Moines, IA) is currently looking for a qualified undergraduate to join our 2027 Summer Internship Program. This is a paid internship starting Monday, May 17 through Friday, August 6, working up to 40 hours per week for the summer, with the potential to turn into a full-time, permanent position in the future.
We are looking for currently-enrolled college students who are close to the West Des Moines area, as this is not a remote internship.
REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Currently enrolled at an undergraduate college or university (Juniors and Seniors may get preference), majoring in Risk Management and Insurance, Agricultural Business, Business Administration or related field. (May 2027 graduates will not be eligible).
Skills: Written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills are necessary. Knowledge of Microsoft Office products: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assists Underwriters with the preparation, keying, and review of acreage reports, hail applications, and amendments.
- Learns and applies the fundamentals of crop insurance.
- Supports departmental projects focused on improving efficiencies within Underwriting.
- Participates in job shadowing opportunities with the Claims team to gain exposure to claims processes.
- Accompanies the Sales team on agency visits to observe and learn about client interactions and relationship management.
- Provides general administrative support to Underwriting and other departments as needed.
- Contribute to special projects and perform additional duties as assigned.
