ABOUT GOODR

We create and sell active eyewear for anyone. No Slip. No Bounce. All Polarized. All Fun. Interested in joining our team? Keep reading.

OUR VALUES: We have two core values: Fun & Authenticity.

  • FUN = Being sh*tty isn’t fun. Agreed? Taking pride in your work, finding joy in being GREAT, and celebrating wins… and losses. Now, that’s fun!
  • AUTHENTICITY = Focusing on being authentic over being liked. (Next-level guru stuff. Count it.)

Fun Fact: We do not allow email to be sent internally. Carrier pigeons only. JK, we use Slack.

LEADERSHIP: We expect our leaders to be guiding lights for their teams. To support that, we provide leadership courses to sharpen their leadership abilities, including an in-house leadership coach.

AUTONOMY: We practice autonomy, empowerment, and accountability so that every team member can be in control of their own life.

  • HYBRID WORKING: This role is required to be in our Inglewood office every Tuesday and Thursday with the occasional third day thrown in.
  • PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: We have an all-company learning program so that we’re constantly leveling up our skills.

SUSTAINABILITY: We think Earth’s pretty rad. That’s why we take action wherever possible to limit our impact on the planet.

  • 1% FOR THE PLANET MEMBER: 1% of goodr’s annual sales go directly to environmental organizations.
  • CARBON NEUTRAL: In 2019, goodr became a 100% carbon neutral company.

Fun Fact: goodr celebrates every Earth Day by releasing limited-edition sunglasses with frames made from 100% recycled materials—and the packaging is 100% sustainable, too!

ABOUT THE ROLE

Your day may start with someone from the content team asking you if we can dress up a dog like Pac Man for a photo shoot. (The answer is “no”, but you’ll recommend something clever as an alternative and everyone will high five like in one of those stock photo images. Teamwork!)  By afternoon, you could be negotiating IP rights with major sports leagues for our next sunglasses launch. In between, you’ll tackle high stakes retailer agreements, catch a lunch presentation on sourdough starters, and support every corner of our business.

Ok. Maybe all that won’t happen in one day, but you get an idea for the variety of ground you’ll cover on a day-to-day basis. Put another way, you will not get bored here. You will be asked to do just about everything, within all parts of the goodr organization.

That said, for juxtaposition, here are a few things that will not be part of your role:

  • A sisyphean treadmill of billable hour requirements
  • Getting calls at 3pm on a Sunday asking if you wouldn’t mind coming into the office to finish off that memo so we can file it at 7am on Monday
  • Constant references to the Bluebook

If you’re ready to deliver sharp legal counsel and help make goodr’s wildest dreams come true—or at least the legally compliant version—come lead our Legal team!

LEADERSHIP

  • Lead by example by consistently living into goodr’s values of Fun and Authenticity
  • Be a culture carrier by leaning into our three fundamentals of communication, professionalism, and vision
  • Hold monthly one-on-ones with each team member to build upon their role duties and hold everyone accountable
  • Ask clear questions, increase everyone’s knowledge, and empower the team so that we can get the best out of every person in your department
  • Give consistent, continuous feedback and challenge your flock to perpetually grow so they become the best version of themselves
  • Own your team’s budget and ensure its accuracy
  • Use imagination and wisdom to set team goals and communicate them clearly
  • Challenge the status quo ALWAYS; the phrase “this is how we’ve always done it” is banned here at goodr, so don’t be afraid to push out of your comfort zone and encourage your team to do the same

ROLE SPECIFIC

  • Serve as a hands-on legal leader, personally handling substantive legal work while leading the broader Legal function and advising teams across the company on commercial, regulatory, privacy, employment and other legal matters
  • Draft, review and negotiate a broad range of commercial and marketing agreements, including manufacturing, supply, distribution, wholesale, retail, 3PL and fulfillment, technology and SaaS, staffing, agency, creator, athlete, influencer, sponsorship, event, league and services agreements
  • Advise on product development, sourcing, overseas manufacturing, importation, logistics, warehousing and distribution, as well as consumer protection, product safety, warranties and related regulatory matters
  • Advise on advertising claims, product substantiation, endorsements, promotions, social media, publicity rights and other consumer-facing communications
  • Lead legal workstreams for corporate transactions and financings, including diligence and coordination with outside counsel, and support corporate governance and company-wide compliance matters
  • Partner with the People team on employment matters, including leaves, accommodations, separations and wage-and-hour issues, and manage pre-litigation demands, subpoenas, insurance and workers’ compensation matters, disputes and litigation
  • Manage goodr’s trademark portfolio and clearance process, brand enforcement, anti-counterfeiting and patent matters, and negotiate inbound and outbound IP licenses with sports leagues, nonprofits and brand partners
  • Support marketplace and channel expansion, cross-border payments and entity structures, and coordination with local counsel
  • Manage outside counsel relationships and spending, including determining when specialized external support is warranted
  • Partner closely with Product, Operations, Money, Marketing, Creative, People and other teams to identify and address legal issues affecting their work
  • Build and maintain practical legal infrastructure, including standardized templates, intake mechanisms, playbooks, self-service tools, policies, training and other processes that streamline recurring work and proactively manage legal and operational risk
  • This role is part of the Office of the CEO, and will report directly to the Chief of Staff
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

ABOUT THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

  • Juris Doctorate (J.D.) from an accredited law school and active membership in good standing with at least one U.S. state bar. Must be admitted to the California Bar OR eligible to register as Registered In-House Counsel under California Rule of Court 9.46 within 180 days of hire (does not require passing the California Bar Exam)
  • 8+ years experience counseling high-growth consumer brands, with at least 4+ years in-house
  • BONUS points for experience in retail, e-commerce, apparel, sporting-goods and lifestyle
  • Demonstrated experience managing direct reports and/or outside counsel is preferred
  • Can translate complex "legalese" into actionable advice for non-legal stakeholders, and is able to raise difficult issues clearly without creating unnecessary noise
  • Working experience advising marketing and creative teams, and negotiating marketing, talent, sponsorship, licensing and related agreements
  • Hands-on privacy experience in a consumer/DTC context, including CCPA/CPRA, consent management, and vendor data terms
  • Excellent judgment and the ability to distinguish material business risk from issues that can be addressed pragmatically
  • Organized and responsive, with the ability to manage a high volume of work and competing priorities
  • Comfortable making decisions with incomplete information and taking ownership of the path forward
  • Thoughtful about process: able to create structure where it helps and eliminate it where it merely slows people down
  • Proactive, curious and willing to roll up their sleeves. Yes, even when the sleeves are pink.
  • Strong communicator who lives into collaboration and holding people accountable
  • Driven by personal growth and thrives in an environment of constant feedback

WHAT YOU GET

  • A role at a company that is going to the moon
  • The opportunity to show up every day and have fun
  • The ability to learn and grow as a person
  • Paid vacation (we encourage you to take time off!)
  • Paycheck... obviously. Salary range: $215K - $240K, final offer will be made within this range based on experience
  • Medical, Dental, and Vision benefits
  • 401(K) with company matching
  • Financial Wellness Counseling
  • Sunglasses. Obviously.
