Intake Specialist (Temporary Position)
The Harriett Buhai Center for Family Law seeks an organized, responsive, and client-focused Intake Specialist to support our work providing meaningful access to justice for low-income Los Angeles County residents navigating the family law system. The Intake Specialist is often the first point of contact for people seeking help, conducting client screenings and intakes to determine eligibility for Buhai Center services, scheduling consultations, and connecting callers with resources and referrals.
Key Features of this Job:
- Client Screening and Eligibility: Screens prospective clients through the New Client Line, online applications, and partner agency referrals; performs conflict checks; applies Buhai Center financial and case standards to determine eligibility; and enters screening information into the case management database.
- Client Communication and Scheduling: Responds to clients and callers within one business day, directs calls to the appropriate staff member, schedules eligible clients for Free Legal Consultations, maintains the consultation calendar, and keeps staff attorneys informed of appointments and cancellations.
- Eligibility Updates, Referrals, and Resources: Updates client eligibility and collects verification documents for grant and contract requirements, processes requests from returning clients, and provides referrals and resources to callers who are not eligible for Buhai Center services.
Requirements
Essential Job Qualifications:
- High school diploma/GED required; some college, paralegal coursework, or an associate or bachelor's degree preferred;
- Strong written and verbal communication skills;
- Excellent organizational abilities and attention to detail;
- Strong computer skills; experience with data entry and case management software preferred. Familiarity with LegalServer or similar systems is a plus;
- Fluency in Spanish and English required;
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
- Customer service experience, preferably in a legal, social services, or nonprofit setting;
- Compassion, professionalism, patience, and discretion when working with clients experiencing sensitive family law matters, including survivors of domestic violence who may be in crisis.
Benefits
Start Date: As soon as possible; October 2026
Position: Full-time, Non-Exempt
Compensation: $27/hr-$34/hr, commensurate with experience
Location: Office in Los Angeles/Koreatown; the Buhai Center currently operates under a hybrid in-office/work-from-home policy, determined by the needs of the organization and the requirements of the position.
