The Role

Our Life and Retirement (L&R) Actuarial team is seeking an L&R Actuarial Intern, who will gain hands-on experience in the development, modeling, and financial analysis of life insurance and retirement / annuity products tailored for educators.  Under direct supervision from various senior members of the team, you will also gain exposure to assumption setting, risk assessment, and regulatory compliance within the insurance industry. It's a great opportunity to apply your quantitative skills and learn how actuarial principles are applied in real-world scenarios to build a foundation for a successful actuarial career.

Our ideal candidate will have the ability to travel to our Springfield, IL offices weekly, per the hybrid work schedule.

The Day-to-Day

  • Product Pricing & Modeling: Assist in building, maintaining, and running actuarial projection models (such MG-ALFA or Excel-based tools) to evaluate the profitability of life and annuity products.
  • Profitability Analysis: Help prepare profit summaries, sensitivity testing, and risk analysis for senior audiences.
  • Assumption Setting: Work with key pricing assumptions such as mortality, lapse rates, and expenses to gain an understanding for the impact they have on product profitability.  Gain exposure to experience data as a way to learn how assumptions are developed.
  • Competitive Analysis: Review analysis containing competitor product pricing, design, and features to help position Horace Mann products in line with company goals.  Gain an understanding of the various insurance products offered by Horace Mann and their specific actuarial considerations.
  • Process Optimization: Identify opportunities to improve or automate existing spreadsheets to drive higher team efficiency.
  • Team Building: Actively participate in various department and project-focused meetings, engage and contribute ideas, and gain exposure to cross-functional collaboration.

Role Requirements

  • Academic Background: Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in actuarial science, finance, economics, statistics, mathematics, business, or related field.
  • Actuarial Exams: A minimum of one (1) Actuarial exam through either the Society of Actuaries (SOA) or the Casualty Actuary Society (CAS) must be completed.

Technical & Soft Skills

  • Technical Proficiency: Expertise in Microsoft Excel (including pivot tables and advanced functions). Exposure to programming languages (SQL, Python, R, or VBA) or dedicated actuarial software is a plus.
  • Analytical Thinking: Exceptional abilities in the analytical space to analyze data, interpret trends, and make sound recommendations.
  • Communication: Compelling written and verbal communication skills are essential for presenting findings, collaborating with team members, and explaining complex concepts to stakeholders.
  • Collaboration: A proactive team member who is eager to learn, adapt to feedback, and manage multiple project deadlines efficiently.
  • Time Management: Detail-oriented and organized to prioritize work and time effectively.
  • Growth Mindset: Being open to growth and learning new skills is an essential piece of the mentality we cultivate in cohesion with our customers - America’s Educators!
