What this role is all about
As a Backend Engineer in our Kafka team, you will work on the systems that power large-scale data streaming and event-driven services across Infobip. You will contribute to the development and maintenance of Kafka-based infrastructure and backend services used by multiple engineering teams and business functions across the company.
You will join a team of engineers focused on building reliable, scalable, and maintainable solutions using Java and Kotlin. The team works on active development projects, regularly building new services and integrations from scratch while collaborating closely with teams across engineering, finance, legal, sales, and other business domains.
This role combines backend engineering, distributed systems, and infrastructure-focused development in an environment where you can expand your knowledge of Kafka, data processing, and large-scale system design.
What you'll do
Develop and maintain backend services and internal tooling using Java, Kotlin, and Spring
Build services responsible for producing, consuming, processing, and transferring data through Kafka
Contribute to the reliability, scalability, and operational health of Kafka clusters and supporting infrastructure
Work with Kafka Connect and integrations between Kafka and different data stores
Troubleshoot production issues, monitor system behavior, and participate in support rotations
Collaborate with engineering teams and stakeholders across the company to design reliable and maintainable solutions
Participate in code reviews, testing, sprint planning, refinements, and retrospectives within a Scrum environment
Contribute to new projects and platform improvements in a team that regularly develops services and solutions from the ground up
What makes you a strong fit
At least 2 years of experience in backend software engineering
Experience with Java or Kotlin and understanding of object-oriented programming principles
Understanding of RESTful services and backend application architecture
Basic understanding of SQL and relational databases
Understanding of data structures, algorithms, and concurrent applications
Analytical and problem-solving mindset with willingness to investigate complex technical issues
Interest in distributed systems, event-driven architecture, and large-scale platforms
Comfortable collaborating with different engineering teams and stakeholders
Fluent in English, both spoken and written
Nice-to-have qualifications
Experience with Spring or Spring Boot
Practical experience with Apache Kafka or Kafka Connect
Understanding of relational and non-relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MS SQL Server
Experience with CI/CD and development tools such as Maven, Git, or Jenkins
Familiarity with Docker and Kubernetes
Experience with monitoring and observability tools such as Grafana, Prometheus, or Graylog
Familiarity with Scrum or other agile development practices
Interest in learning new technologies and improving engineering practices
Familiarity with agentic AI, MCP (Model Context Protocol), or similar AI technologies
