Mechanical Design Engineer

Role
As a Mechanical Engineer within the Lab Infrastructure team, you will design and build robotic automation systems, with a significant focus on custom End-of-Arm Tooling and intelligent automation. You will be a key contributor throughout the entire project lifecycle, from initial concept to implementation, navigating ambiguity to solve complex engineering challenges. Your core responsibilities include translating project requirements into detailed designs, creating efficient and scalable automation solutions, performing structural analysis, reviewing designs and procuring components. You will closely collaborate with research groups and industry partners to execute physical builds and automation solutions.
How your work moves the mission forward
- Develop new robotic automation systems and infrastructure layouts, including cost and effort estimation.
- Design and implement robotic automation, advanced End-of-Arm Tooling and innovative R&D workcells, from concept to component selection.
- Identify and integrate cutting-edge technology products into automation workcells.
- Create detailed manufacturing drawings and document designs for handoff to external system integrators or internal build teams.
- Establish a standard for mechanical hardware and component selection to ensure robust and scalable automation solutions.
- Collaborate with a cross-functional team of product managers, software developers and researchers to provide cost-effective, high-quality solutions aligned with internal requirements.
- Document and communicate your work clearly for internal and external stakeholders.
Skills you will need to be successful
- Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field with 2 to 4 years of professional experience.
- Hands-on design expertise in custom End of Arm tooling development and implementing robotic automation systems.
- Proficiency in 3D CAD modeling, preferably Autodesk Inventor with PDM/ PLM system and AutoCAD.
- Excellent knowledge of design principles, Design for Manufacturing/ Assembly (DFM/DFA) and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerances (GD&T).
- Proactive approach to working in ambiguous situations, making decisions and driving solutions.
- Excellent collaboration skills with cross-functional teams, external integrators and customers.
Skills that will differentiate your candidacy
- Extensive experience designing complex robotic workcells, integrating logistic systems (conveyors or AGV), and designing safety technology, combined with an expert understanding of structural analysis, preferably in the electronic manufacturing industry.
- Professional working experience with rapid hardware prototyping.
- Experience with vendor management and procurement.
- Analyze complex engineering challenges independently while maintaining well-focused attention to detail.
- Adapt quickly and multi-task effectively in a fast-paced, changing environment.
- Willingness to travel domestically and/or internationally to support deployments and partner integration.
The base salary for this full-time position is between $126,400 - 172,200 (USD) + %15 bonus + equity + benefits. Your recruiter will share more about the specific salary range for your targeted location during the hiring process.
