Electrical Engineer - Future Forward
Company Description
It started with a simple idea: what if surgery could be less invasive and recovery less painful? Nearly 30 years later, that question still fuels everything we do at Intuitive. As a global leader in robotic-assisted surgery and minimally invasive care, our technologies—like the da Vinci surgical system and Ion—have transformed how care is delivered for millions of patients worldwide.
We’re a team of engineers, clinicians, and innovators united by one purpose: to make surgery smarter, safer, and more human. Every day, our work helps care teams perform with greater precision and patients recover faster, improving outcomes around the world.
The problems we solve demand creativity, rigor, and collaboration. The work is challenging, but deeply meaningful—because every improvement we make has the potential to change a life.
If you’re ready to contribute to something bigger than yourself and help transform the future of healthcare, you’ll find your purpose here.
Job Description
Primary Function of Position:
As an Electrical Engineer, you will work with a group of talented and dedicated people to improve and extend Intuitive robotic product lines. You will contribute broadly to the Future Forward group, with a focus on the development of innovative electronics at the heart of Intuitive systems.
As a member of the Future Forward engineering team, you will work cross-functionally and be involved in designing, implementing, and testing complex mixed-signal PCBAs and integrating them into complete surgical robot solutions and seeing these through human use and product release.
The successful candidate has familiarity with the design and integration of mixed-signal PCBAs, is comfortable troubleshooting at the board and system level and has previous exposure to the medical devices development processes.
Quick learning and a desire to understand requirements from a user and engineering’s perspective are essential to become a valuable system developer. An exceptional sense of shared responsibility and shared reward is required, as is the ability to make work fun and interesting. Supporting you will be a development and management team that knows and cares about what you are doing and wants you to succeed.
Essential Job Duties
This position is involved in all aspects related to the electronic board design (PCBAs) for robotic surgical systems. The Electrical Engineer will:
Design or modify PCBAs, participating in electrical architecture definition, selecting components, designing schematics (OrCAD preferred), performing component placement, stack-up definition, and overseeing PCB layout.
Work with contract manufacturers (CM) to coordinate timely arrival of prototypes and production PCBAs.
Bring up and debug prototypes, work with embedded software teams to test various functions of the board.
Represent Electrical Engineering on cross-functional project teams for designing and developing next generation robotic surgery.
Adopt the best methods to meet product requirements and integrate them into effective designs.
Develop, implement, test and document solutions according to clinical, statutory, and environmental requirements.
Provide technical expertise to resolve challenging design, field and manufacturing issues.
Develop prototypes to aid actions for future product development.
Provide technical support to other stakeholders on electrical engineering concepts
Support the quality and regulatory process.
Ensure that medical device designs meet product quality and safety requirements, in compliance with design control processes defined in the Quality Management System.
Qualifications
Required Skills and Experience
Experience with mixed-signal PCB designs, embedded system design, and PCBA design for harsh environments.
Strong foundations on electrical engineering concepts: analog, digital, high-speed and signal integrity, MPSoCs, FPGAs, MCUs, DC/DC power converters.
Hardware development experience in a fast-paced, high-visibility environment, preferably in medical surgical or therapeutic products.
Familiarity in all phases of the product development lifecycle, including design, implementation, debug, verification, qualification, and transfer to manufacturing.
Hands-on engineering skills and ability to work well in a team environment.
Understanding of component selection criteria, design for reliability and manufacturability.
Excellent communication skills (written and oral) across all levels and organizations.
Ability to collaborate closely with software and FPGA teams for architecture definition, processor/FPGA selection and interface definition.
Required Education and Training
Minimum Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering or adjacent technical field with 4 years of experience, or Master's degree with 3 years of experience, or PhD degree with 2 years of experience.
4 years of focused and hands-on mixed-signal board-level design from architecture phase through production.
