Combustion Equipment Engineer (m/f/d)
Mission Brief
You will own the design, analysis, development and qualification of combustion equipment for liquid rocket engines, including gas generators and pre burners. As the technical responsible you translate engine level requirements into robust combustion device architectures and mature them through analysis, design, manufacturing and hot fire testing, ensuring safe, stable, testable and manufacturable solutions.
Your Role in Our Space Mission:
- Own the design and development of liquid rocket engine combustion equipment, including gas generators, pre burners, their injector heads and combustion chambers, ignition systems and associated interfaces.
- Define component requirements, operating envelopes, interface conditions and technical budgets based on engine level performance, lifetime and operability needs.
- Perform preliminary and detailed sizing of combustion devices using first principles methods and appropriate analytical or numerical tools.
- Lead architecture and design trade offs covering injector concepts, mixture distribution, pressure drop, combustion efficiency, stability, ignition, cooling, materials and manufacturability.
- Plan, support and evaluate component and engine level test campaigns, including instrumentation definition, test predictions, data review and correlation of models with hot fire results.
- Investigate combustion anomalies and performance deviations, identify root causes and define technically justified corrective actions.
- Own the technical development roadmap for your hardware, including maturation activities, design reviews, manufacturing follow up and qualification planning.
- Work closely with the cycle, turbomachinery, valves, feed systems, controls, structures, thermal, manufacturing and test teams to deliver an integrated propulsion system.
Qualification Checklist
- MSc in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering or a comparable technical discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
- Several years in liquid rocket engine development, with significant responsibility for combustion device design, analysis, development or testing.
- Hands on experience with gas generators, pre burners or comparable high performance liquid propellant combustion devices.
- Excellent understanding of combustion, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, heat transfer and liquid rocket propulsion.
- Significant experience in injector or combustor sizing, particularly at very high or very low O/F, and in interpreting hot fire test data.
- Experience owning a development roadmap through design reviews and into qualification.
- Proficiency in Python, MATLAB or a comparable programming language.
- Strong technical ownership and the ability to make sound engineering decisions with incomplete early phase data.
- Fluent in English.
- Willingness to travel occasionally for test and launch operations.
Bonus Skills
- Experience with both gas generators and pre burners across different liquid rocket engine architectures.
- Experience with combustion stability, acoustic analysis, ignition transients or operability assessment.
- Experience with injector technologies such as coaxial, impinging, swirl or pintle concepts.
- Experience taking combustion hardware from initial sizing through manufacturing and hot fire qualification.
