Staff Developer - Patient Booking
Hi, I'm Shane, and I lead the Patient Booking Web team at Jane. I started out writing software for medical devices and for oceanographers. Over the last decade or so I've led development teams at places like Amazon, Hootsuite, and Coinbase. What I care about most is building software that real people rely on, inside a team where everyone gets to grow.
Patient Booking Web is a newer team with a very public-facing job. We own the places patients go on the web to connect with their clinic: the online booking page, My Account, and the booking experience clinics embed on their own websites. Every time a patient books a physio session, a massage, or a counselling appointment online, they're using something we built. Making that moment simple and welcoming is one of the most direct ways we get to help the helpers.
The work ahead is big. We're modernizing patient booking and moving it to React one piece at a time, and it stays live the whole way for every clinic and patient who depends on it. Along the way we want booking to be truly accessible, so patients using a keyboard or a screen reader can book as easily as anyone else. We also want booking to work well on a phone and to be easy for clinics to embed wherever their patients are. We have plans and architecture ideas we're excited about, and we'd love someone to pressure test them and look around the corners we haven't checked yet.
That's where you come in. As our Staff Developer, you'll be the technical leader on a small, curious team. You'll help shape the architecture, write code alongside us, and mentor developers who are earlier in their careers and eager to grow. If turning a long-lived product into something patients love sounds like fun to you, I'd really like to meet you.
The Impact You Could Have
Help shape the architecture for moving Online Booking and My Account to React, including routing, data, state, and how legacy and new code share a page while we migrate one section at a time.
Strengthen the team's existing plans by spotting risks early and bringing clear options to the table, so we land on decisions everyone can stand behind.
Write code every week across React, TypeScript, and Rails, setting the patterns the rest of the team will build on.
Champion accessibility from the very first commit, so keyboard behaviour, focus management, and screen reader support are built in from the start and backed by testing that shows they work.
Grow the developers around you through mentorship, pairing, and code reviews that help people learn and build confidence.
Partner with Design on our component library to close the gaps the booking experience needs.
Work with the teams whose pages live inside the booking flow, so they can move to React on their own timelines.
Drive safe, gradual rollouts with feature flags and production monitoring, so big changes ship in small steps that can be paused at any time.
Bring a pragmatic, responsible approach to AI, using agentic workflows to speed up the migration where they genuinely help while keeping a thoughtful human eye on quality.
The Experience We Feel We Need
Around 10 or more years of building software professionally, with experience working at a staff or technical lead level.
Deep, hands-on expertise in React and TypeScript, including client-side routing, browser history, and state management with Redux Toolkit or something similar.
A full stack background with real frontend strength, ideally including moving a legacy frontend to React in stages while it stayed live in production.
Practical experience applying WCAG 2.1 AA to real interfaces, including keyboard behaviour, focus management, and ARIA.
Comfort designing APIs alongside backend colleagues, plus experience with feature flags, gradual rollouts, and production monitoring.
A track record of technical leadership, where you've written design docs, made thoughtful calls in uncertain moments, and helped other developers grow.
A collaborative, low-ego style where you write down your reasoning, change your mind when the evidence says to, and raise concerns early and kindly with options in hand.
Everyday use of AI in your coding workflow, and curiosity about using it systematically, through things like agentic workflows, to move large migrations forward.
Experience with Ruby on Rails is a nice-to-have that will help you ramp up quickly, and we're happy to support you in learning it on the job.
Bonus points for hands-on screen reader testing with tools like JAWS or NVDA, or for building embeddable widgets or web components that run on other people's websites.
If you don't meet every single qualification but are excited about this role, we'd still love to hear from you.
