DRC Accounting Operations Lead

LeadRemote~€8,300 – €11,250 / mo
Job Description

About the Company

In the coming decades, our world needs far more critical minerals including copper, lithium, and cobalt, to build electric infrastructure, vehicles, data centers, and electronics. The mining industry is making 10x fewer discoveries per dollar spent on exploration compared to 30 years ago because the easy-to-find, near surface deposits have largely been discovered.

KoBold is the leading scientific mineral exploration, mine development, and technology development company. Our goal is to turn mineral exploration into a repeatable science to discover the minerals the world needs—by integrating artificial intelligence, human intelligence, and new technology. Our multidisciplinary teams of data scientists, engineers, and geologists work together to build data systems, design new sensors, and establish industry-leading workflows to develop and test subsurface predictions on our exploration projects.

Our first discovery, Mingomba, is a high-grade copper deposit in Zambia, found after spending materially less than industry average. We are developing Mingomba with the same technical rigor that we apply to exploration. The Mingomba team brings together mine and processing engineers, geologists, data scientists, software engineers, and community, health & safety, construction, and operations specialists. By combining industry knowledge and cutting edge technology, we are developing Mingomba into a world class project that has safer and more predictable outcomes for ourselves, partners, and communities. It is expected to create thousands of good jobs for generations.

KoBold runs exploration programs in eight countries, all with the potential for another discovery.

KoBold is privately held; investors include institutional asset managers T. Rowe Price and Canada Pension Plan Investments; technology venture capitalists Andreessen Horowitz, Breakthrough Energy Ventures, BOND Capital, Durable Capital, StepStone, and Standard Investments; and strategic natural resources companies BHP and Mitsubishi.

About the Role

In this role, you will perform full cycle accounting for assigned DRC entities. In addition to owning the day-to-day accounting and month-end close for the assigned DRC entities, you will independently manage statutory audits and regulatory compliance. You will provide support to field exploration teams and vendors. Since KoBold is a startup company, your role will be dynamic and your role and responsibilities will grow as the company grows.

Responsibilities

  • Perform full-cycle accounting and financial reporting. Manage end-to-end accounting for assigned DRC entities, including monthly close, reconciliations, and variance analysis. Prepare and review journal entries including payroll, and ensure the integrity of the general ledger on an ongoing basis.
  • Ensure compliance with DRC tax, accounting, and mining legislation. Support accurate and timely compliance with DRC direct and indirect tax obligations (monthly VAT, WHT filings), mining-specific levies, and SYSCOHADA statutory reporting requirements. Prepare SYCOHADA and CPCC compliant statutory financial statements and coordinate with local advisors and regulatory bodies as needed to meet filing deadlines and maintain good standing.
  • Manage external audits and relationships with authorities. Serve as the primary point of contact for external auditors (ONEC certified DRC auditors and Holding company auditors in South Africa) and local regulatory bodies for assigned entities, ensuring timely responses, proper documentation, and effective resolution of audit findings.
  • Support field exploration and FP&A teams. Collaborate cross-functionally with field exploration and financial planning teams on project expense reporting and analysis, including review of petty cash reconciliations, to ensure accurate and timely financial information for operational decision-making.
  • Build and scale accounting operations. Implement and maintain new processes as the company grows, proactively identifying opportunities to improve efficiency and enable the accounting function to scale as entity scope and complexity increase.
  • Handle sensitive information with confidentiality and strong ethics. Demonstrate commitment to ethical business practices and full compliance with all applicable accounting rules, reporting requirements, and anti-corruption laws, maintaining the highest standards of professional integrity.

Qualifications

The candidate must have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, or equivalent certification
  • 7+ years experience in accounting, with mining industry experience preferred
  • Experience working with multiple currencies
  • Strong knowledge of SYSCOHADA, IFRS & US GAAP
  • Fluency in both French and English, written and spoken
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to quickly learn new tools as needed and solve new problems continuously
  • A high degree of independence and the ability to work effectively with limited supervision
  • Flexibility to accommodate meetings with staff/vendors overseas
  • Experience interfacing with DRC regulatory bodies including DGI, CPCC, ARSP
  • Interest in learning about mineral exploration and being a close partner to the exploration project teams

What to Expect

Joining KoBold means getting the opportunity for hands-on exposure to our exploration projects around the world. All employees are expected to travel to project sites, with a minimum of one week per year. Field-facing and technical roles spend significantly more time in the field.
