Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Director of Software Engineering to lead the modernisation of our legacy applications and drive our cloud-based transformation. In this role, you will design and implement a scalable microservices platform, mentor high-performing engineering teams, and ensure the delivery of large-scale, high-performance applications in a regulated environment. Your expertise in Java, cloud technologies, DevOps, and microservices architecture will be critical in shaping our technical roadmap and fostering a culture of innovation and excellence.

This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who thrives in complex, high-stakes environments and has a proven track record of delivering transformational change.

What will you be doing?

Technical Leadership & Strategy

  • Define and execute the technical vision for modernising legacy systems, ensuring alignment with business goals and regulatory requirements.

  • ·Lead the design and implementation of a cloud-native microservices platform, optimising for scalability, performance, and resilience.

  • Drive the cloud transformation strategy, including migration, optimisation, and cost management.

  • Champion DevOps best practices, including CI/CD, infrastructure as code (IaC), and observability, to accelerate delivery and improve reliability.

Team Building & Mentorship

  • Build, lead, and mentor high-performing engineering teams, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.

  • Develop and retain top talent, providing technical guidance and career growth opportunities.

  • Bridge the gap between engineering, product, and business stakeholders, ensuring clear communication and alignment on priorities.

Architecture & Development

  • Hands-on experience in Java and modern frameworks (e.g., Spring Boot) for large-scale, high-performance applications.

  • Architect scalable, secure, and compliant solutions in a regulated environment (e.g., financial services, gaming, or healthcare).

  • Ensure non-functional requirements (performance, security, scalability) are met in all deliverables.

Regulatory & Compliance Awareness

  • Deep understanding of compliance and security standards in regulated industries (e.g., GDPR, PCI-DSS, or iGaming regulations).

  • Work closely with legal, risk, and compliance teams to ensure all solutions meet regulatory expectations.

Who are you?

  • 15+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 5 years in a leadership role (e.g., Senior Engineering Manager, Director, or Head of Engineering).

  • Proven experience modernising legacy applications in a regulated environment.

  • Hands-on expertise in Java and large-scale, high-performance systems.

  • Cloud transformation leadership: Designed and deployed microservices platforms on AWS.

  • Strong background in DevOps, including CI/CD pipelines, containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes), and infrastructure automation (Terraform, Ansible).

  • Experience building and mentoring teams through significant technical change.

  • Familiarity with observability tools (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, ELK) and performance tuning.

  • Managed global teams through transformational change

Nice-to-Have

  • iGaming industry experience (e.g., online casinos, sports betting, or fintech for gaming).

  • Knowledge of event-driven architectures (Kafka, RabbitMQ) and serverless technologies.

  • Experience with security-hardened systems and compliance audits.
