Job Description

Mentimeter is an engagement tool with a clear goal in mind. To turn presentations into conversations. Through real-time interactivity and clear visualizations, we get people to participate, engage and become more productive. Transforming all those passive meetings, airless classrooms and drawn out trainings into valuable and memorable moments.

We truly believe that you achieve the best results by doing things together. And that successful leaders need to adopt a curious and collaborative mindset in order to get there. So with you at Mentimeter, you’ll be a big part of the ambition to help over 1 billion people listen, learn and work better together.

We are hiring a Staff Core Data Engineer to set the direction for how Mentimeter's products define, emit, and evolve data. This is a senior, hands-on systems role focused on product data semantics, canonical events, and architectural intent. Like every Staff role at Mentimeter, the leverage comes through teams: you define the patterns, guardrails, and decision frameworks, and work hands-on with the teams that carry them into production. The role is cross-cutting by design. While reporting into Engineering, the mandate spans Product, Data Platform, Analytics, AI, and GTM.

This role exists to turn Mentimeter's product activity into a strategic asset by establishing Core Data as the connective tissue between products, insights, and decisions. This role does not run analytics or platforms. It defines meaning, standards, and direction.

What you'll do

  • Establish and evolve Core Data as a first class domain at Mentimeter, defining how product signals are captured, trusted, and turned into insights and decisions across the company
  • Act as the founder and steward of Canonical Domain Events, ensuring they become the shared language between products, analytics, and decision making
  • Define data contracts at emission, ensuring signals are consistent, trustworthy, and reusable
  • Shape architecture intent for how product signals flow into analytics, AI, recommendations, and GTM systems further downstream
  • Work closely with product and engineering teams to ensure features are designed with learning and signal quality in mind
  • Enable governance through design. Clear models, strong defaults, guardrails, and explicit tradeoffs rather than process or policing
  • Act as the Staff-level reference point for Core Data design across the company, bringing your craft into the teams doing the work rather than building beside them

Where we are today

  • In-product events already stream through Redpanda into ClickHouse, giving us interaction-level product signals in near real time
  • Event schemas are versioned from the start. You will be a part of how they evolve: compatibility, deprecation, and contracts downstream consumers can trust
  • Redpanda and ClickHouse are the substrate, not the job. The platform is in place so you can help work on semantics, standards, and direction

Success criteria

  • Mentimeter shifts away from treating a single database as truth, instead grounding decisions in shared, trusted signals expressed through Canonical Domain Events
  • New products and features natively emit Canonical Domain Events as part of normal development
  • Core Data shortens the loop between product behavior and product decisions
  • Teams design, emit, and evolve events autonomously within shared guardrails. Core Data creates leverage, not dependency on one person

We believe you have

  • 8+ years of experience designing and owning data-heavy systems in product-led companies
  • You work in learning loops: clarify outcome, ship, observe, learn. Impact and insight over output
  • Strong systems thinking and comfort reasoning about boundaries, contracts, and long-term evolution
  • Hands-on technical credibility. You can read, write, and reason about production code and data models
  • Experience working close to product teams, shaping instrumentation and learning loops at the source
  • Ability to translate complex systems into clear models others can follow
  • Comfort operating in ambiguity and driving clarity through action

What this role is not

  • Not a reporting or analytics role
  • Not a data platform operations role
  • Not a Martech or GTM tooling role
  • Not a people-management-first role

Not required

Swedish is not required (as daily work is carried out in English and the Mentimeter team currently boasts 50+ different nationalities)

AI and Hiring at Mentimeter
At Mentimeter, we believe AI helps us work smarter - but it never replaces the human assessment, curiosity, and personal connection that define our culture and our hiring. We use AI as a sparring partner: to bounce ideas, bring new perspectives, support structure, and make our work more efficient. But the meaning, decisions, and interactions always come from people.
  • AI does not screen or decide on candidates.
  •  There is no automated filtering, ranking, or decision-making in our recruitment process. Every application is reviewed by a person.
  • Hiring teams may use AI to support their work - for example, to structure notes, prepare interview questions, or organize their thinking.
AI strengthens our work, but it does not define it. At Mentimeter, we’re not building an AI-driven hiring process - we’re building a people-first culture, where technology helps us listen, learn, and grow together.

Culture at Mentimeter
At Mentimeter we believe in giving everyone a voice - regardless of who you are. So we build a platform that does just that. Our platform is not only our product but also our organization. A platform where people feel safe, where differences are embraced, a place where you can have fun. We strongly encourage applicants who are people of color, LGBTQ+, women, people with disabilities, and/or formerly incarcerated people, and a college degree is not strictly required. In order to give everyone a voice, we need to be as diverse as our users.
