About Nest

Nest builds care plan infrastructure for veterinary hospitals. Corporate veterinary groups use Nest to run preventive care memberships under their own brand, and we handle what sits underneath: enrollment, recurring billing, analytics, marketing, and seller-of-record compliance.

Care plans change how pets receive care. Pet owners pay a predictable monthly amount, visit more often, and catch problems earlier. Hospitals build steadier revenue and longer client relationships. Our mission is to make that kind of preventive care available to every pet.

About the team

Nest Engineering builds the software hospitals use to run care plans, including a Flutter desktop application used in clinics, FastAPI and gRPC services in Python and Rust on Google Cloud, and integrations with practice management systems. The team has fewer than ten engineers and ships to clinics daily through GitHub Actions. This role leads the desktop application that clinic staff rely on throughout the day.

What you'll do

Our clinic app runs at front desks on Windows and macOS, often on unreliable connections and alongside printers and scanners. You will own its architecture and set the desktop patterns the rest of the team builds on, working directly with leadership on product decisions where desktop constraints matter. After a year, the app will stay usable when a clinic's connection drops, hardware integrations will work reliably across both platforms, and the codebase will have clear, shared conventions for desktop behavior.

Responsibilities

• Design and build the clinic-facing desktop application in Flutter and Dart for Windows and macOS.

• Own performance, window management, and OS integration on both platforms.

• Design state management with Riverpod, Bloc, or Provider, and local persistence that holds up under unreliable clinic connectivity.

• Integrate printers, scanners, and other clinic peripherals through Method Channels or FFI.

• Set the standard for desktop patterns across the codebase, including keyboard navigation, context menus, hover states, and memory management.

• Write Rust for a small set of performance-critical functions.

• Review code and hold the quality bar for the desktop codebase.

Who you are

Minimum requirements

• You have 7 or more years of software engineering experience, including at least 3 years of production Flutter.

• You have shipped at least one non-trivial desktop application in Flutter, Electron, Qt, or a native framework.

• You understand how desktop UX expectations differ from mobile and design for them.

• You have worked at a startup and can judge when to move quickly and when to slow down.

• You write clean, modular code and are comfortable going low-level to fix problems such as rendering lag.

Preferred qualifications

• Experience writing Rust, or a clear interest in learning it on the job.

• Experience integrating hardware peripherals through Method Channels or FFI.

• Experience building offline-capable or local-first desktop applications.
