About Nest

Nest builds care plan infrastructure for veterinary hospitals. Corporate veterinary groups use Nest to run preventive care memberships under their own brand, and we handle what sits underneath: enrollment, recurring billing, analytics, marketing, and seller-of-record compliance.

Care plans change how pets receive care. Pet owners pay a predictable monthly amount, visit more often, and catch problems earlier. Hospitals build steadier revenue and longer client relationships. Our mission is to make that kind of preventive care available to every pet.

About the team

Nest Engineering builds the software hospitals use to run care plans, including a Flutter desktop application used in clinics, FastAPI and gRPC services in Python and Rust on Google Cloud, and integrations with practice management systems. The team has fewer than ten engineers, relies on automated tests, and ships to production daily through GitHub Actions and Cloud Deploy. This role works on the backend services that run enrollment, recurring billing, and payments for every hospital on Nest.

What you'll do

Every care plan enrollment, payment, and plan change runs through our backend, and hospitals and pet owners need it to be correct every time. You will design and build those services, own payment flows and the handling of sensitive client data in a SOC 2 Type II environment, and find weak abstractions before they become hard to change. You will work directly with leadership, and your technical judgment will shape product decisions. After a year, the core payment and enrollment services will have clear boundaries and documentation, the legacy paths you refactored will be durable services, and the backend will have shared review and design standards you helped set.

Responsibilities

• Design and build backend services in Python 3.12+ with FastAPI and gRPC on Google Cloud.

• Build and maintain payment flows through Stripe, including recurring billing for care plans.

• Handle PII and healthcare-adjacent data with a HIPAA-aware approach within our SOC 2 Type II controls.

• Refactor legacy code paths into durable, well-documented services.

• Maintain high availability using Terraform, Cloud Run, and Google Spanner.

• Review code and help set the standards for code quality and documentation across the backend.

• Use AI tools such as Claude and Copilot for research and scaffolding while keeping design decisions your own.

Minimum requirements

• You have 7 or more years of experience building production backend systems, with deep Python expertise.

• You have worked at a startup and can judge when to favor speed to market and when to invest in architecture.

• You have designed APIs and distributed transactional systems on cloud infrastructure.

• You have handled sensitive data such as PII, payments, or healthcare information.

• You write code others can read six months later and refactor legacy code with confidence.

Preferred qualifications

• Experience with GCP, including Cloud Run and Spanner.

• Experience with Stripe or another payments platform.

• Experience working in a SOC 2 or HIPAA-regulated environment.

• Experience managing infrastructure with Terraform.
