Job Description

Role Overview:

NETGEAR’s Pro AV business is transforming how live events, houses of worship, corporate AV, and digital signage move video, audio, and control across IP networks. We are looking for a Java Software Development Manager to lead the engineering team building the cloud platform that powers configuration, monitoring, and control for our AV-over-IP switching and device portfolio. Based in our Taiwan R&D office, you will lead a team of Java backend engineers in the design and delivery of scalable, secure microservices that AV integrators rely on every day. You will own end-to-end engineering execution — hiring and developing engineers, partnering with product management and AV systems engineering on roadmap, and driving the technical architecture of a cloud platform that integrates tightly with NETGEAR AV hardware. This is a hybrid role partnering daily with cross-functional teams across Taiwan, the US, and India.

Key Responsibilities:

· People Leadership and Team Building

o Hire, develop, and retain a high-performing team of Java backend engineers across levels.

o Provide regular coaching, career development, and performance feedback through effective 1:1s and performance reviews.

o Foster a culture of engineering excellence, ownership, collaboration, and continuous learning.

o Plan team capacity, headcount, and growth in alignment with business objectives.

o Champion diversity, equity, and inclusion in hiring and team practices.

· Technical Leadership and Architecture

o Drive the architecture of the AV cloud platform: Java/Spring Boot microservices, REST and gRPC APIs, event-driven processing, and data pipelines.

o Set technical direction, standards, and best practices for code quality, testing, observability, and deployment.

o Lead technical design reviews and balance trade-offs across performance, scalability, security, and time-to-market.

o Stay current on Java ecosystem advances (modern JDK features, virtual threads, frameworks, JVM tuning) and apply them pragmatically.

o Partner with architects on multi-region cloud architecture for AV device management.

· Delivery and Execution

o Own end-to-end delivery of features for the AV cloud platform: roadmap planning, sprint execution, release management, and post-launch monitoring.

o Collaborate with product management on prioritization, scope, and timelines.

o Establish clear engineering metrics (delivery, quality, on-call) and use them to drive continuous improvement.

o Identify and remove blockers; manage cross-team dependencies across firmware, mobile, web, QA, and IT.

o Drive root-cause analysis and prevention for production incidents; participate in on-call leadership rotation.

· Product and Customer Focus

o Partner with product management, AV systems engineers, and field application engineers to understand AV integrator and end-user needs.

o Translate AV use cases (AV-over-IP control, multi-site management, integrator onboarding) into robust backend services.

o Drive customer-impacting reliability, performance, and security improvements based on telemetry and customer feedback.

o Represent engineering in customer escalations, design reviews with key partners, and industry events when needed.

· Quality, Security, and Compliance

o Enforce secure coding practices, threat modeling, and OWASP Top 10 compliance across the team.

o Champion automated testing, code review standards, and CI/CD discipline.

o Ensure data protection, authentication, and authorization are designed in from the start (e.g., OAuth2/OIDC, GDPR considerations, SOC 2 readiness).

o Lead high-availability, disaster recovery, and backup planning for cloud services.

· Cross-Functional Collaboration

o Partner closely with firmware, mobile, web, QA, DevOps, and product teams across Taiwan, the US, and India.

o Influence platform decisions across NETGEAR Enterprise where AV intersects with shared services.

o Communicate clearly with senior leadership on plans, status, risks, and trade-offs.

· Process and Continuous Improvement

o Define and refine the team’s agile operating model and ceremonies (Scrum or Kanban as appropriate).

o Drive retrospectives and continuous improvement on engineering velocity, quality, and team health.

o Champion automation across the SDLC: testing, deployment, infrastructure as code, and operations.

Required Qualifications:

· Education and Experience

o Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.

o 10+ years of professional Java software development experience, with at least 3+ years directly managing engineering teams (hiring, performance, growth).

o Proven track record of delivering large-scale, production cloud-based services in Java.

· Technical Depth

o Expert in Java (8+, ideally with experience on Java 17/21) and the Spring / Spring Boot ecosystem.

o Strong understanding of microservices architecture, REST/gRPC APIs, message brokers (Kafka, RabbitMQ), and event-driven design.

o Hands-on experience with relational and NoSQL databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, Cassandra, Redis).

o Solid grasp of JVM internals, performance tuning, profiling, and concurrency.

· Cloud and DevOps

o Strong experience designing and operating multi-tenant SaaS or cloud platforms on AWS, Azure, or GCP.

o Hands-on experience with containerization (Docker) and orchestration (Kubernetes / EKS or equivalent).

o Familiarity with CI/CD (Jenkins, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI), infrastructure as code (Terraform, CloudFormation), and observability tooling (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK, Datadog).

· Quality, Security, and Reliability

o Track record of building services with strong test discipline (unit, integration, contract, end-to-end) and a robust code review culture.

o Experience with secure-by-design practices, OAuth2/OIDC, OWASP Top 10, and data protection regulations.

o Familiarity with high-availability patterns, SLO/SLI definition, and modern incident management.

· Networking and Connected Devices

o Working knowledge of networking concepts (L2/L3, VLAN, multicast) sufficient to partner effectively with firmware and product teams.

o Experience integrating cloud services with IoT or edge devices and managing fleet-scale telemetry is a strong plus.

· Leadership and Soft Skills

o Demonstrated people leadership skills: hiring, mentoring, performance management, and career development.

o Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; Mandarin is a plus.

o Ability to work effectively across geographically distributed teams.

o Pragmatic, customer-focused, and outcome-driven.

o Alignment with NETGEAR Pando competencies for this level.
