Job Description

Percona is looking for a remote, full-time Senior Backend Software Engineer to join the PMM team and help build the next generation of Percona Monitoring and Management (PMM).

PMM is a free and open-source observability and database management platform for monitoring, troubleshooting, and managing MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, and the infrastructure they run on.

You will work primarily on the backend of PMM, building services, APIs, database integrations, and distributed components in Go. You will work with modern observability technologies including OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, VictoriaMetrics, ClickHouse, metrics, logs, and traces, while helping us evolve PMM toward an increasingly automated and agentic observability platform.

We are also actively exploring how AI coding tools, AI agents, automation, MCP, and LLM-based workflows can improve both the PMM product and the way we develop software.

What You Will Do

  • Design and develop reliable, scalable, and performant backend services and APIs in Go.

  • Build features for monitoring, observability, troubleshooting, and management of database environments.

  • Work with OpenTelemetry and observability signals including metrics, logs, and traces.

  • Develop integrations with MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, and other database technologies.

  • Work with distributed systems, containers, Kubernetes, and cloud-native infrastructure.

  • Design and evolve APIs and internal service architecture.

  • Take ownership of complex features from technical design through implementation, testing, and delivery.

  • Participate in code and architecture reviews and help establish engineering best practices.

  • Improve automated testing, CI/CD, developer tooling, and engineering productivity.

  • Explore and adopt AI-assisted development, coding agents, and automation where they improve engineering effectiveness.

  • Contribute to PMM as an open-source project and collaborate with the wider community.

What You Have Done

  • Strong backend engineering experience with significant production experience in Go.

  • Strong understanding of software architecture, APIs, concurrency, and distributed systems.

  • Experience designing, building, and documenting APIs.

  • Experience with at least one of MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis/Valkey, or similar database technologies.

  • Experience with observability, monitoring, metrics, logging, or tracing systems.

  • Familiarity with OpenTelemetry concepts and architecture.

  • Experience with automated testing and a strong focus on software quality.

  • Comfortable working with Linux.

  • Experience with Git and modern software development workflows.

  • Experience with containers and cloud-native environments.

  • Fluent written and spoken English.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fully remote team.

What Will Make You Stand Out

  • Strong practical experience with OpenTelemetry, including OTLP, collectors, metrics, logs, or traces.

  • Experience with Prometheus, VictoriaMetrics, ClickHouse, Grafana, or similar observability technologies.

  • Experience building or operating distributed observability platforms.

  • Deep knowledge of database internals or database performance monitoring.

  • Experience with Docker and Kubernetes.

  • Experience building secure distributed systems and working with encryption, authentication, and authorization.

  • Experience contributing to or maintaining open-source projects.

  • Experience using AI coding tools such as Cursor, Claude Code, Codex, or similar tools as part of your engineering workflow.

  • Experience building AI-powered developer workflows, agents, or engineering automation.

  • Experience with MCP (Model Context Protocol), agent tool integration, or similar agent interoperability frameworks.

  • Experience working with LLM APIs, agent frameworks, or AI-assisted troubleshooting / observability systems.

  • Experience improving engineering productivity through automation and developer tooling.
