Job Description

At Probably Good, our goal is to help people build careers that are good for them and for the world. We’re excited to share that, after exceeding expectations in our previous grant period, we just received a new grant from Coefficient Giving to significantly scale our work further. We are therefore hiring two new new people for our Programs team.

Why this work matters

A career decision can shape decades of someone’s life, and what they contribute to the world. Yet people who want to make a difference often face difficult questions without access to relevant resources or quality sounding boards.

We help people navigate important questions with thoughtful guidance, practical resources, and a serious commitment to understanding their individual circumstances. We’ve helped hundreds of advisees with their careers, led workshops around the world, created the largest impact-focused job board of its kind, and built the infrastructure that enables our programs to scale.

We’re looking for talented people to help shape the next chapter. You’ll help advisees turn a desire to do good into a clearer direction and concrete action, while bringing your own expertise and ideas to how we expand our support.

About the roles

We expect to make two hires from this hiring round. We welcome candidates who are interested exclusively in career advising, but we'd also like to gauge fit for our other programs.

Career advising

Career advising will be a central responsibility of your role, and could be your sole focus. You’ll work directly with our advisees to help them navigate consequential decisions, combining thoughtful conversation, careful analysis, and practical support.

This will include:

  • Preparing for and conducting one-to-one advising sessions with people from varied backgrounds and career stages.

  • Helping advisees identify patterns in their experience, clarify their motivations, and understand where their skills could be especially useful.

  • Exploring promising career paths and weighing tradeoffs between impact, personal fit, career development, and practical constraints.

  • Researching relevant cause areas, professional fields, organizations, and opportunities.

  • Helping people turn broad ambitions into concrete next steps: testing a direction, developing skills, seeking feedback, making connections, or applying for roles.

  • Providing follow-up resources, feedback, and relevant introductions.

  • Maintaining accurate advising records so that we can analyze and improve our own performance.

  • Sharing insights, learning from advisees’ experiences, and helping improve our advising approach.

Additional areas you could contribute to or lead

You would be expected to spend 50-100% of your time on advising, but your role could include up to 50% of your time on one of the following:

Events

Our team regularly delivers events for top universities and professional groups, encouraging more people to consider impact in their career planning. You could help us reach even more talented people by developing and delivering workshops, giving talks, hosting Q&As, and representing Probably Good externally. There’s scope to shape our content, build relationships with hosts, expand to new audiences, and connect participants with ongoing support.

Headhunting and talent matching

Many promising people come through our advising program, and our job board regularly has more than 1,500 open roles. You could identify promising candidates, build relationships with hiring organizations, understand what particular roles require, and help fill the crucial roles that can unlock progress across a range of cause areas. You could also develop our approach to proactive outreach and thoughtful talent matching, using the latest AI models to scale our existing offer.

Who might be a good fit

There’s no single professional background that makes someone a strong fit for these roles. Relevant skills could come from advising, mentoring, research, recruiting, management, coaching, community building, or work in one of our priority cause areas.

We’re looking for people who bring:

  • Careful listening and interpersonal judgment. You build trust, understand different perspectives, and take people’s circumstances seriously.

  • An impact-focused approach. You’re motivated to help people contribute to a better world and interested in thinking rigorously about how they can do so.

  • Analytical ability and practical judgment. You can make sense of complex situations, assess tradeoffs, and translate your reasoning into useful guidance.

  • Curiosity across causes and careers. You enjoy investigating unfamiliar fields and engaging seriously with different ways of contributing.

  • Clear, candid communication. You explain your thinking accessibly, acknowledge uncertainty, and offer constructive feedback with kindness.

  • Ownership and dependability. You take initiative, follow through on commitments, and communicate when priorities change or you need support.

  • A collaborative approach. You share knowledge, disagree constructively, and use feedback to improve your work.

  • Entrepreneurial spirit. You’re excited about building new things, testing them, and iterating on the results, and you’re comfortable working with significant ambiguity.

  • Fluency in English. Most of our users are English speakers, and advising calls are conducted in English.

Familiarity with effective altruism and other communities focused on social impact is useful but not required. We also value experience that broadens the professional paths, geographic contexts, and perspectives represented in our team.

Working at Probably Good

You’ll join a small, remote, collaborative team where your ideas and judgment can influence how we work.

We value ownership, transparency, and constructive collaboration. We aim to provide clear priorities, thoughtful feedback, and the space and support to get things done, while avoiding unnecessary bureaucracy.

Role details and benefits

  • Compensation: For transparency and fairness we set pay using a salary calculator that places every role on a shared scale and adjusts for the cost of living where you're based. Below are the expected ranges for candidates in the US and UK, running from the lowest seniority at the least expensive location in each country to the highest seniority at the most expensive; where you fall depends on your experience, skills, and location. We'll agree on the level and position within the range during the hiring process.

    US: $75,700 – $116,300

    UK: £53,900 – £91,300

  • Salaries in other countries are set using the same calculator (adjusted for each location’s cost of living), so for candidates outside the US and UK the equivalent range will differ by location and currency.

  • Benefits:

    • PTO: 30 days of paid leave per year, inclusive of public holidays.

    • Sick leave: Two additional weeks of paid sick leave per year, rising with length of service.

    • Parental leave: 12 weeks at full pay for all new parents.

    • Health insurance: Employer-covered insurance premiums for you and your dependents, including dental and vision.

    • Retirement: An annual, unconditional grant of 5% of salary toward your pension/retirement.

    • Expenses: Reimbursement of ergonomic equipment, coworking fees, and relevant professional development.

    • Flexibility: Fully remote with flexible hours.

  • Location: Remote, with a strong preference for candidates who are available on weekdays for at least 3 hours between 12-5pm UK time. We are unable to sponsor visas for these roles.

  • Working hours: Full-time preferred, with potential for part-time (minimum 0.5 FTE).

  • Travel: We currently have one in-person retreat per year (in London) that you would be expected to attend. Depending on the particular scope of the role, travel for other in-person events or conferences would be advantageous, but we would discuss that during the hiring process.

  • Start date: We aim to conclude the round in mid-late December, and have any new hire(s) start early in 2027, but we can be flexible for the right person.

  • Title and scope: We’re flexible on titles, and will agree on an appropriate balance of responsibilities during the hiring process. These are individual contributor roles, but we are open to more junior and senior versions, depending on experience.

  • Reports to: Head of Programs

Application process and timeline

We expect the process to work roughly as follows, but this remains subject to change.

  • Apply by 23:59 UTC on 1 November. We aim to reply to all candidates within two weeks of the deadline.

  • An interview with the hiring manager in mid-November.

  • A work test that will simulate the work you would do in the role.

  • An interview with the CEO.

  • Reference checks.

  • We aim to make an offer in mid-late December.

If you’re excited about this work but unsure whether you meet every criterion, we encourage you to apply. We want Probably Good to be an inclusive and welcoming place to work, strengthened by different experiences and perspectives.

For questions or accessibility adjustments, contact [email protected].

Applicants are welcome to also apply for one-to-one advising with a member of our team, but we’ll only offer sessions once your application has concluded. For fairness reasons, we ask that you do not contact individual members of the team about the hiring process.
