Engineering Manager, Computer Vision
The physical world generates an extraordinary amount of data, yet most of what happens inside manufacturing and logistics sites remains invisible to the systems that run them.
At Protex AI, we're changing that.
We're building Site Intelligence, an AI platform that connects cameras, enterprise systems and operational knowledge to give businesses a real-time understanding of what's happening across their operations.
Our computer vision technology transforms video into structured operational data, while AI agents turn that data into insights, investigations and actions. We're helping some of the world's largest enterprises improve safety, eliminate inefficiencies and increase productivity.
We've built a strong foundation in safety. Now we're expanding into a much bigger opportunity: using AI to fundamentally change how industrial operations are understood, managed and optimised.
Interested in creating a new category with us? We're looking for high-agency people who thrive in ambiguity, move quickly and care deeply about solving real problems.
In-Office Expectation: Hybrid – 2 days/week in-office
Employment Type: Full-time (Direct Hire)
Please note that this is not an open position for contractors or remote work.
About the Team
The Computer Vision Features team builds the computer vision applications that run on edge devices at client sites around the world. We own the real-time video processing pipeline that runs our detection models, the rules engine that turns detections into safety and operations events, the vision-language models we run on the edge, and the components that deploy, connect and monitor all of it from the edge to the cloud.
What You'll Do
This is a hands-on management role: you'll lead the Computer Vision Features team and still ship with it. You hold yourself and the team accountable, and you have strong opinions about where computer vision should go. You're ambitious and hungry to make an impact.
You will:
Lead, hire, coach and grow a multidisciplinary team of computer vision, video and edge engineers. Give every piece of work a clear owner, and cross-skill the team so that no part of the system depends on one person.
Set the technical direction for computer vision at Protex. You follow the latest work in computer vision, including vision-language and foundation models, and balance it with the real-world constraints on edge compute, latency and cost.
Ship with the team: design, write code and review code. Set the standards for testing and reproducibility.
Shape the work before it's built: scope it with product managers, then own delivery from idea to deployment. You manage priorities, timelines and dependencies with Computer Vision Operations, infrastructure and application development.
Lead with urgency when detection quality drops at a client site, from triage to root cause to fix. Build components, tools and processes that prevent production issues and make the rest faster to detect and fix.
Make the team faster: improve development workflows, measure delivery, and make releases to edge devices safe and fast.
Model our core values: urgency, excellence, agency and care.
What You'll Need
3+ years of people management within engineering
5+ years of software or ML engineering experience, including hands-on work on computer vision systems in production, and 2+ years leading or managing engineering teams.
Hands-on experience with deep learning for computer vision: you've trained and deployed optimised CNN models (e.g. PyTorch, TensorRT, ONNX) and experimented with vision-language models.
Strong Python skills, and experience building data, training or deployment pipelines on cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred), with containers and infrastructure as code.
Strong opinions on the direction of computer vision, and a track record of setting technical direction, leading architecture discussions and delivering complex technical projects across teams on time, from design to production.
You're a good communicator with product sense: you connect model quality to client outcomes, write clear design docs, and turn strategic goals into concrete engineering plans.
BSc in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
Nice To Have
Experience with real-time video analytics or edge deployment (e.g. NVIDIA DeepStream, GStreamer, C++, CUDA).
Experience running model inference in the cloud (e.g. AWS SageMaker or Bedrock).
Experience with dataset curation or annotation workflows.
