Legal Counsel
About Us
Compensation is one of the key levers for attracting and retaining great talent, yet most companies are struggling to get it right. They simply have no choice but to rely on poor data and unsophisticated tools for their pay decisions. That's why we created Ravio.
We help some of the world's most innovative and ambitious companies build stronger teams and reach their goals through better compensation. Our goal is to bring compensation into the modern age by building the ultimate real-time compensation solution. We're passionate about ensuring everyone is paid what they deserve, no matter their background or circumstances. We believe that when compensation is done right, everyone wins.
Ravio is growing fast, which means you can too. Joining a startup in the early days and scaling it into a global product is one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences a career can offer. If that sounds exciting to you, you're in the right place.
The Role
We're hiring Ravio's first dedicated Legal Counsel, someone who brings strong privacy expertise. You'll own our core legal documentation, from customer contracts to data processing terms and privacy notices, and be the main point of contact for our external legal support. You'll be a key stakeholder for Ravio's senior leadership team, advising on a wide range of legal and regulatory matters, and you'll work closely with our Commercial, Product, People and Data teams to keep Ravio's legal position current as the product and business grow. You'll also be a named contact in governance processes such as our whistleblowing framework.
Alongside the core legal remit, you'll roll up your sleeves on some of our compliance operations too, including supporting our annual SOC 2 audit and other compliance projects as they come up. This suits someone equally comfortable drafting a contract and working through the details of an audit.
This is a broad, hands-on role for someone who wants ownership from day one. You'll work independently for a lot of it, backed by an external law firm retainer for specialist and overflow work, and you'll have real scope to shape how the legal and compliance function grows at Ravio as we scale.
Key Responsibilities
Contracts and commercial
Oversee Ravio’s corporate actions (shareholder and investors matters, board documentation, stock plan admin, M&A/licensing deals, etc)
Handle employment-related legal matters
Keep our Service Agreement, DPA and Custom Data Terms current against live operations, product changes and bespoke customer requirements, acting as a thought partner to the commercial team
Own the Contract Amendments Tracker, logging liability and exposure on bespoke terms
Provide legal review of the corporate and commercial sections of our contracting workflow, and sense-check bespoke order forms
Data protection and privacy
Confirm our Technical and Organisational Measures (TOMs) and Data Processing Provisions (DPPs) stay accurate against live data flows and product changes, working closely with the tech team
Keep our Privacy Policy current as the website and platform evolve
Update candidate and employee privacy notices as our recruitment and HR processes change
Review and maintain our DPIA and ROPA as the product evolves
Governance and external relationships
Act as a named recipient for Ravio's whistleblowing process
Maintain our trademark records
Own the relationship with our external legal counsel for ad-hoc and ongoing legal support
Confirm ICO registration renewal each year
Compliance & audit support
Coordinate our SOC 2 (and ISO, where relevant) certification cycle: line up the auditor and timeline, and manage Vanta audit access
Own day-to-day Vanta administration: policy reviews, joiner/leaver checks, vendor and risk reviews
Triage due diligence and security questionnaires from Sales beyond our self-serve materials
Support other compliance projects as they come up, such as our data deletion and anonymisation process improvements
About You
Qualified solicitor (England & Wales) or equivalent, with a few years' PQE: not fresh out of a training contract, but this isn't a senior or lead position either
Strong working knowledge of UK/EU data protection and privacy law (UK GDPR, Data Protection Act 2018) and how it applies to a B2B SaaS product
Genuinely happy to work on hands-on compliance and audit operations alongside legal work, not just advisory work
Comfortable drafting, reviewing and negotiating commercial contracts, DPAs and customer terms with minimal oversight
A pragmatic, commercial approach: you know when to push back and when to find a workable middle ground
Confident managing an external counsel relationship and getting the most out of a retainer
Strong stakeholder management skills; you can translate legal and compliance risk into plain terms for non-legal teams
Comfortable being the sole in-house legal hire, at least initially, and happy to build process rather than inherit it
Nice to Have
Familiarity with SOC 2/ISO frameworks or GRC tools such as Vanta (or a fast willingness to learn them)
A recognised privacy qualification (e.g. IAPP CIPP/E), though not required
Experience with DORA or other cross-border regulatory frameworks
In-house experience at a SaaS or technology business
Compensation & Benefits
£65,000 – £85,000
Company ownership (everyone gets a meaningful equity stake in Ravio)
25 days paid holiday + bank holidays + 4 wellness days (take them anytime, no questions asked!)
Up to 6% pension matching scheme
£60 a month wellness allowance (invest in your physical wellbeing, on us)
Private healthcare cover
Income protection insurance (for full peace of mind in case you cannot work because of sickness or disability)
20 weeks fully paid parental leave & 8 weeks for non-birthing parent
What You'll Get
The opportunity to be part of the early team of a category-defining company backed by a strong roster of world-class investors
An inclusive work environment characterised by a high degree of trust, respect and integrity
The ability to work closely with and learn from the company's founders as well as a highly ambitious team of smart, mission-driven individuals
A high degree of autonomy and the opportunity for fast-tracked professional growth
While we're very focused at work, we also know how to have fun in the process and don't take ourselves too seriously
If this sounds like you and you're ready to help us build a category-defining company with global ambitions, we'd love to hear from you.
