Miles supports complex business processes throughout the full lifecycle of a finance or leasing contract — from quotation and pricing to contract management, billing, assets, services and integrations.

For our growing Product Engineering team in Porto, we are looking for Java backend engineers who want to help evolve Miles and build software that is used as part of a long-term international product.

Your role

As a Software Engineer in our Product organisation, you’ll work on the continued development of Miles and its backend capabilities.

This is a hands-on product development role where you’ll translate business and domain requirements into Java services, APIs and microservice-based solutions.

You won’t simply implement isolated technical tasks. You’ll work closely with other engineers, analysts and internal consumers to understand the business problem behind a feature, contribute to the technical solution and take ownership of what you build.

You’ll be working in a complex enterprise domain where maintainability, scalability, reliability and long-term product evolution matter.

Our engineering landscape includes a large Java ecosystem and an increasing focus on modern backend services, APIs, microservices, event-driven architecture and cloud-native development.

What will you do?

• Design, develop and maintain Java backend services within Miles;
• Translate complex business and domain requirements into scalable software solutions;
• Develop and evolve REST APIs used by other Miles components and integrations;
• Contribute to our microservice architecture and apply Domain-Driven Design principles where appropriate;
• Work with internal API consumers and integrations with external systems;
• Work with synchronous and asynchronous communication patterns depending on the use case;
• Take ownership of functionality from design and implementation through testing, release and production;
• Investigate and resolve issues in existing backend services;
• Write clean, maintainable and well-tested code;
• Participate in code reviews, technical discussions and engineering decisions;
• Collaborate with colleagues across Product, Analysis and Architecture;
• Help improve existing services while also contributing to new product capabilities;
• Share knowledge and contribute to our wider engineering community.

What do you bring?

We’re looking for someone with professional experience in Java backend development and an interest in building software products for the long term.

Ideally, you have experience with:

• Java;
• Spring Boot, Quarkus or another modern Java framework;
• REST APIs;
• Microservices;
• SQL and relational databases;
• Automated unit and integration testing;
• Git and modern software development practices.

Experience with any of the following is a plus:

• Domain-Driven Design;
• Kafka or other messaging technologies;
• Event-driven architectures;
• Docker;
• Kubernetes;
• CI/CD;
• Cloud-native development;
• Observability and production troubleshooting.

You don’t need to know every technology we use from day one. More importantly, you enjoy understanding the business domain behind the code, solving problems together with your team and taking responsibility for the quality of what you deliver.

We’re open to both medior and senior engineers, depending on your experience and level of ownership.
