Senior Accountant / Certified Accountant (Contabilista Certificado)

Location: Lisbon, Portugal

The Role

As a Senior Accountant, you will play a key role in delivering high-quality accounting, reporting and tax compliance services to a diverse portfolio of local and international clients. Working within a collaborative and fast-paced environment, you will take ownership of client engagements, support junior team members, and contribute to the continued growth of Apex's Corporate Solutions business in Portugal.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the day-to-day accounting and bookkeeping activities for a portfolio of Portuguese and international clients.
  • Review accounting records and ensure compliance with Portuguese GAAP and relevant regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare and review monthly, quarterly and annual financial reporting packages.
  • Coordinate and prepare statutory financial statements and supporting schedules.
  • Prepare, review and submit corporate tax returns, VAT returns and other regulatory filings.
  • Act as the designated Certified Accountant (Contabilista Certificado) where applicable, including the signing and submission of financial statements, tax declarations and statutory filings.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships, acting as a trusted point of contact for accounting, reporting and compliance matters.
  • Liaise with auditors, tax authorities, banks and other external stakeholders as required.
  • Support, mentor and review the work of junior team members, contributing to their professional development.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and contribute to operational efficiencies across the team.
  • Ensure all client deliverables are completed accurately and within agreed deadlines.

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

Essential

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics or a related discipline.
  • Qualified Certified Accountant (Contabilista Certificado) and member of the Ordem dos Contabilistas Certificados (preferred or required depending on business need).
  • Minimum 3 years' experience in accounting, financial reporting and Portuguese tax compliance.
  • Strong knowledge of Portuguese GAAP, corporate tax, VAT and statutory reporting requirements.
  • Experience managing multiple clients and competing priorities within a professional services, consultancy, outsourcing or accounting environment.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and financial reporting tools.
  • Experience using accounting and ERP systems.
  • Fluent Portuguese and English communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a team environment.

Desirable

  • Experience working with international clients and multi-jurisdictional structures.
  • Exposure to accounting process improvement initiatives and systems implementations.
  • Knowledge of IFRS would be advantageous.
