Job Description

Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

We’re looking for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join the Marsden-funded research project, “Quantifying energy dependence phenomena for rough scatterers.”

This project works lies in the pure/applied mathematics interface and aims to quantify the dependence of scattering properties on energy using semiclassical analysis. The successful candidate will work with principal investigator Melissa Tacy on the project at the University of Auckland and interact with the international associate investigators Simon Chandler-Wilde (Reading) and Julie Rowlett (Chalmers). This position comes with NZD10,000 travel allocation, and there are further opportunities to apply for more travel support within the department.

There is a possibility of extension of the period of employment to take up teaching roles within the Department of Mathematics.

This is an opportunity to build your research profile within a supportive and internationally connected mathematics environment. You’ll:

• Undertake high-quality research in mathematics, with a focus on analysis.
• Develop and contribute to research outputs, including publications in reputable journals and conference proceedings.
• Contribute to the wider research environment through activities such as seminars, events, peer review and academic service.
• Develop your own research portfolio, with the potential to attract future external funding and postgraduate students.
• Contribute to teaching activities, which may include lectures, tutorials, seminars, teaching coordination, assessment and co-supervision of students.

You’ll work closely with Melissa Tacy on the project and have opportunities to engage with researchers internationally.

This is a full-time (40 hrs per week) 12-month fixed-term role

The remuneration is $92,213 per annum

He kōrero mōu | About you

We’re looking for someone who has:

• Completed, or is very close to completing, a PhD in Mathematics with a research focus in analysis, with your thesis examined before the fellowship start date.
• Research experience in analysis.
• The ability to work independently and contribute positively to a collaborative research environment.

Experience in one or more of the following would be advantageous:

• Semiclassical analysis
• Numerical analysis
• Spectral theory
• Theory of partial differential equations (PDEs)

This opportunity is open to researchers within 0–5 years of PhD award, allowing for career breaks.
