Senior Software Engineer (Trust)
Beneath a simple yet elegant user interface lies a complex system of functionalities. Our AI-powered product uses advanced image recognition, facial verification, face recognition, facial anti-spoofing (liveness detection), and behavior analysis to make identity decisions. We help our partners build onboarding processes that ensure good people get things done and bad folks get stopped.
But knowing who someone is only gets you halfway. The next question is whether they can be trusted — and answering it means checking a person's identity data against the authoritative sources that hold the truth. Every country does this differently: a different registry, a different database, a different set of rules about what can be checked and how.
To take our platform to the next level, we're looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join the Trust team. This team builds and operates the services that validate a person's identity data against country-specific authoritative sources — government registries, national databases, AML and sanctions screening — and turns that patchwork of very different upstreams into a single, dependable trust signal our customers can act on. Alongside sibling teams like Trust Registries and Trusted Documents, your work directly determines how many countries we can cover, how fast we can launch a new one, and how much our partners can rely on the answer we give them.
YOU'LL HELP US PROTECT HONEST PEOPLE ONLINE BY:- Designing, building, and operating Trust's backend services — the integrations with external identity data sources and the validation logic on top of them — with a strong focus on reliability, scalability, and maintainability
- Expanding our global coverage: onboarding new countries and data sources quickly, and building the abstractions that make the next integration cheaper than the last one instead of more expensive
- Modelling messy, inconsistent upstream data into consistent, well-defined verification results — including the matching and validation rules that decide whether the data actually belongs to the person in front of us
- Making our systems resilient to upstreams we don't control — timeouts, retries and idempotency, backpressure, circuit breaking, graceful degradation, backwards-compatibility testing, SPOF elimination, and end-to-end monitoring of every provider we depend on
- Handling sensitive personal data responsibly, with regional data residency and compliance requirements designed in from the start
- Participating in on-call rotations, incident response, and postmortems to ensure our most critical checks stay healthy
- Driving engineering quality through code reviews, CI practices, runbook documentation, and mentoring teammates
- 5+ years of experience building large-scale backend applications with Python, including event-driven and async architectures with message queues (e.g. SQS, RabbitMQ, or similar)
- Hands-on experience integrating with third-party APIs at scale — and a healthy respect for what happens when they're slow, flaky, undocumented, or quietly change their response format
- Proven ownership of production-critical services — you understand what it means to be on-call and take reliability seriously
- Deep experience designing for resilience in distributed systems: idempotency, retries, backpressure, timeouts, backwards compatibility
- Strong data modelling instincts — you can turn heterogeneous, inconsistent external data into a clean domain model that holds up as the number of sources grows
- Strong understanding of modular design approaches and SOLID principles
- Hands-on experience building scalable, maintainable APIs
- Proficiency in a range of testing strategies that ensure robust and reliable software, including testing against external dependencies you can't fully control
- Solid understanding of relational database fundamentals
- Familiarity with structured logging and observability practices
- Strong communication skills — you can clearly articulate technical ideas to engineers and non-engineers alike, and work comfortably with Product, Compliance, and external data providers
- Experience with identity verification, KYC/AML, financial services, or government/registry integrationsExperience working und
