About the Role
This role focuses on the core of the system: building components, maintaining our Figma libraries, and creating documentation that helps other designers use the system effectively.
You'll work with the Design Systems; this includes building new components and refining existing ones. The work requires someone who's detail-oriented, thinks systematically, and understands how design systems scale.
Your Day-to-Day
As a Senior Product Designer, you will:
-
Build and refine components: You'll create new components based on product team needs and improve existing ones to handle edge cases, accessibility requirements, and multi-brand applications.
-
Maintain and organize our Figma libraries, ensuring they're structured clearly, documented well, and easy for other designers to use. You'll keep things tidy as the system grows and evolves.
-
Create clear, useful documentation that helps designers understand when and how to use components correctly. Good documentation means fewer questions and more consistent implementation across teams.
-
Work with design tokens and Figma variables to ensure the system supports theming, multi-brand needs, and maintainability at scale.
-
Help bridge Index and product-area extensions, ensuring patterns flow appropriately between the core system and the specialized libraries that build on it.
-
Partner with engineering on design-to-code alignment when needed, helping ensure what's in Figma matches what gets built.
-
Work independently while staying connected to the core team. You'll manage your own work, communicate proactively about progress and blockers, and stay aligned on priorities through async collaboration.
-
Maintain high craft standards in everything you contribute. Design systems work is detail work—precision and consistency matter.
Are You a Fit?
Sounds awesome, right? Now, let’s make sure you’re a good fit for the role.
Must-have Skills
We’re looking for someone who has:
- 4+ years of product design experience, with meaningful time spent working on or contributing to design systems.
- A portfolio showing design systems work—whether building components, creating documentation, or establishing patterns. We want to see how you think about systematic design problems.
- Strong Figma skills, including experience with component architecture, variants, auto-layout, and variables. You know how to build things that scale and that other designers can actually use.
- Experience with design tokens and an understanding of how they enable theming, consistency, and multi-brand support.
- Solid understanding of design fundamentals—typography, spacing, color, and interaction patterns. You can explain why something should be a certain way, not just how to build it.
- Knowledge of accessibility standards (WCAG) and how they apply to component design. Accessibility should be built in, not bolted on.
- Strong documentation skills. You can write clearly and create guidelines that people actually read and follow.
- Ability to work independently and manage your own priorities. You're proactive about communicating and don't need constant check-ins to stay on track.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Design, HCI, or related field.
Nice to have Skills
- Understanding of how design systems connect to code (CSS, React component APIs, etc.)
- Experience with design system versioning and contribution workflows
- Familiarity with multi-brand or white-label design system challenges
- Experience working with distributed or fully remote teams
- Background in news media, publishing, or content-heavy products
- Knowledge of design system tooling beyond Figma (Storybook, Zeroheight, etc.)
- AI Tooling Proficiency: Leverage one or more AI tools to optimize and augment day-to-day work, including drafting, analysis, research, or process automation. Provide recommendations on effective AI use and identify opportunities to streamline workflows.
