Job Description

XNRGY Climate Systems is a North American leader in the sustainable design and advanced manufacturing of custom air-handling and liquid-cooling systems. With decades of HVAC engineering and manufacturing expertise, XNRGY delivers innovative, energy-efficient solutions for mission-critical industries, including hyperscale and modular data centers, healthcare, life sciences, semiconductors, and advanced manufacturing.

XNRGY is building and expanding its mission-critical service and technical-training capabilities to support its growing installed base of liquid-cooling and chiller products. As part of this growth, XNRGY is seeking an experienced Advanced Trainer — Lead Instructor to build, lead, and continuously improve technical training for its air-cooled oil-free centrifugal chiller product range.

The Advanced Trainer is the lead instructor and program owner for XNRGY’s three-day startup and service certification program. This position owns the development and delivery of instructional materials, practical laboratory exercises, assessments, certification standards, training records, and the instructor qualification plan.

This position requires more than classroom presentation experience. The successful candidate will combine deep, hands-on chiller service knowledge with the ability to teach technicians to a measurable competency standard. This individual must be capable of introducing faults into a live machine, guiding technicians through structured diagnosis, and safely restoring the equipment to a known operating condition.

The Advanced Trainer will work closely with Product Engineering, Technical Services, Service Operations, the Product Service Engineer, the Technical Writer, and factory and field personnel to ensure training reflects approved technical documentation and actual equipment performance.

This is an individual-contributor role with no direct reports. The Advanced Trainer will lead classes supported by co-instructors and laboratory personnel drawn from XNRGY’s factory and field teams. The position reports to the Manager, Technical Services.

Responsibilities

  • Build, own, and deliver XNRGY’s startup and service certification program for air-cooled oil-free centrifugal chillers.

  • Develop and maintain the master syllabus, instructor guides, session presentations, participant workbook, pre-work modules, quick-reference materials, component-identification resources, and related instructional content.

  • Convert complex product, controls, electrical, thermal, and service information into practical instruction technicians can apply in the field.

  • Develop and administer hands-on training covering startup procedures, troubleshooting, escalation, root-cause evidence collection, and return-material authorization requirements.

  • Lead instruction on product configuration, operating limits, application envelopes, piping and instrumentation diagrams, control architecture, HMI navigation, software updates, communications, and structured troubleshooting.

  • Maintain sufficient technical depth to support or deliver compressor, bearing, drive, electrical-power, and compressor-controller instruction when required.

  • Personally lead live startup and troubleshooting laboratories using rotating participant groups.

  • Build and maintain a library of fault-injection scenarios covering the injection method, expected fault codes, correct diagnostic path, common errors, safe restoration steps, time limits, and scoring criteria.

  • Teach technicians to distinguish actual equipment failures from application, controls, communications, setpoint, permissive, timing, and site-related conditions.

  • Maintain responsibility for test-cell safety during training and restore equipment to a known good condition following every laboratory exercise.

  • Specify and coordinate the training assets required for effective delivery, including HMI stations, controller and drive benches, sectioned components, electrical displays, reference materials, and test-cell access.

  • Secure and protect the test-cell availability required for practical training.

  • Develop and maintain written examinations, quizzes, practical sign-off checklists, competency matrices, certification standards, and certificate templates.

  • Verify participant prerequisites and administer certification requirements consistently.

  • Maintain training, certification, recertification, expiration, and revocation records to an auditable standard.

  • Enforce safety-critical and practical qualification requirements without compromising standards to accommodate scheduling or delivery pressures.

  • Establish and maintain clear boundaries between certified startup and service work and factory-only or advanced-level activities.

  • Own enrolment procedures, prerequisite verification, joining instructions, training-record retention, program evaluations, revision control, and instructor qualification.

  • Lead the internal pilot program and incorporate findings before training is delivered to customers or service partners.

  • Develop and implement a train-the-trainer program to qualify additional instructors and create sustainable program capacity.

  • Adapt delivery for internal technicians, customers, and service partners while protecting confidential and proprietary information.

  • Review training content against field failures, warranty data, product changes, and technician feedback to keep the program current.

  • Provide structured feedback to the owners of field documentation when gaps, defects, or usability issues are identified during training development or delivery.

  • Manage class size and instructor coverage to ensure participants receive meaningful hands-on experience rather than observation-only exposure.

Required Qualifications

  • Ten or more years of hands-on field-service experience with commercial chillers, including at least five years working with centrifugal machines.

  • Direct experience personally performing chiller startups, commissioning activities, troubleshooting, and failure diagnosis.

  • Demonstrated ability to introduce a fault into live equipment and safely return the machine to a known good operating condition.

  • Experience instructing technicians through formal courses, apprenticeship programs, structured mentoring, or manufacturer training.

  • Ability to assess demonstrated competence rather than relying solely on course attendance or written testing.

  • Strong knowledge of chiller-level and plant-level controls, control architecture, HMI navigation, and diagnosis using trend and alarm data.

  • Experience with Modbus, BACnet, and EtherNet/IP sufficient to teach communications troubleshooting and distinguish network faults from device faults.

  • Ability to explain setpoint priorities, permissives, safeties, interlocks, and operating sequences.

  • Strong understanding of evaporator and condenser operation, approach-temperature interpretation, equipment operating envelopes, and site conditions that affect system performance.

  • Ability to teach technicians how to read piping and instrumentation diagrams, electrical single-line diagrams, control drawings, and product submittals.

  • Current NFPA 70E or CSA Z462 qualification and demonstrated lockout/tagout competence.

  • Refrigerant-handling certification valid in the country of work.

  • Knowledge of A2L refrigerants and their applicable handling and safety requirements.

  • NITC STAR HVACR Mastery certification in the United States, or a 313A, applicable provincial equivalent, or Red Seal certification in Canada.

  • Demonstrated ability to write professional instructional materials, assessments, practical exercises, and instructor guides.

  • Candidates will be asked to provide or complete a technical-writing and practical skills assessment. This is a firm requirement of the position.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with both magnetic-bearing and foil-bearing centrifugal compressors.

  • Experience with externally mounted drives, including parameter, firmware, and compatibility management.

  • Formal instructional-design education or credentials combined with a strong field-service background.

  • Experience developing learning-management-system or SCORM-compatible training content.

  • Previous OEM factory-training, test-cell, or factory-acceptance-testing experience.

  • Experience delivering certification programs tied to startup authorization, warranty eligibility, or service-partner qualification.

  • Bilingual proficiency in English and French or English and Spanish.

Initial Priorities

  • Resolve outstanding technical, audience, certification, language, and learning-platform requirements with the appropriate stakeholders.

  • Secure the test-cell capacity and training assets required for practical instruction.

  • Coordinate with the owners of field documentation to ensure training is built against approved, controlled procedures and forms.

  • Develop the instructor-led course materials, participant workbook, pre-work content, laboratory exercises, and reference resources.

  • Establish the assessment framework, including the examination bank, practical sign-off process, fault-injection scenarios, and safe-restoration procedures.

  • Implement a gated pre-work program that protects classroom time for applied instruction and hands-on practice.

  • Deliver an internal pilot cohort and treat it as a formal test of the program.

  • Revise and release the program based on pilot findings before delivering the first customer or service-partner cohort.

  • Establish the instructor qualification and train-the-trainer process required to support future program growth.

  • Maintain certification standards that protect equipment performance, field safety, service quality, and XNRGY’s warranty position.
