Senior Field Service Technician - Air Handlers, CAHU & CRAH
Overview
XNRGY Climate Systems designs and manufactures advanced cooling systems for data centers and other mission-critical environments. Our field service team starts up, commissions, troubleshoots, and services high-performance air-handling equipment at customer sites across the United States.
About the Role
The Senior Field Service Technician – Air Handlers (CAHU/CRAH) is a Level 3 technical resource responsible for field commissioning, service, and complex troubleshooting of custom air handling units and computer room air handlers. This technician verifies that fan arrays, controls, sensors, filtration, chilled-water coil controls, and building-management-system interfaces operate as designed. The role works independently at customer sites and coordinates closely with customers, project teams, controls partners, and other field technicians.
Travel and Location
• This is a field-based position with frequent travel to customer facilities and data center projects throughout the continental United States.
• Typical assignments follow either a two-weeks-in-the-field / one-week-home schedule or a three-weeks-in-the-field / one-week-home schedule, depending on project needs.
• Primary project locations may include Amarillo, Texas; Abilene, Texas; and other locations as business needs require.
• The technician must be comfortable working at active construction and operating sites and coordinating travel around project schedules.
Why Join
• Work on custom cooling equipment supporting next-generation data centers and other critical facilities.
• Take ownership of field start-up, commissioning, and service work with opportunities to build technical depth and mentor other technicians.
• Earn additional compensation through overtime and travel, based on hours worked and applicable company policies.
• Join a growing service organization supporting projects across the United States.
Key Responsibilities
• Perform delivery inspections of air-side equipment, document condition, and record damage with clear written notes and photographs.
• Verify installation readiness, including unit clearances, filters, plenum and duct connections, and condensate arrangements before start-up.
• Check electrical supply, fan rotation, and safety devices; identify deficiencies and coordinate corrective action with the appropriate site team.
• Configure and address electronically commutated (EC) fans, verify fan-array addressing, and confirm controller network settings and connectivity.
• Verify temperature and humidity sensors and document calibration results; inspect filtration installation and any fitted disinfecting filtration system.
• Commission air-handler controls integration with the building management system (BMS), including point-to-point verification and completed records.
• Commission fan-array control and verify specified N-1 redundancy behavior using approved procedures.
• Measure and verify airflow, static pressure, and fan performance against approved design criteria and project documentation.
• Commission chilled-water coil control valves and verify capacity-control operation across the required operating range.
• Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, controls, communication, and air-side performance issues using drawings, wiring diagrams, control sequences, technical manuals, a laptop, and appropriate test instruments.
• Complete pre-functional, commissioning, point-to-point, calibration, performance, and service records accurately and at the point of work.
• Communicate equipment status, deficiencies, risks, and next steps to customers and internal project teams; provide clear turnover information.
• Share technical knowledge with junior technicians and support consistent, safe execution of field procedures.
Required Qualifications
• At least 7 years of hands-on commercial or industrial HVAC field service, start-up, or commissioning experience, including substantial work with air handlers, CRAH/CAHU equipment, or fan arrays.
• Demonstrated ability to commission and troubleshoot EC fan arrays, HVAC controllers, sensors, and BMS-connected equipment.
• Working knowledge of airflow, static pressure, fan performance, filtration, condensate management, and chilled-water coil control.
• Ability to read and apply electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, control sequences, equipment submittals, and technical manuals.
• Ability to use a laptop and field instruments to configure equipment, verify communications, collect measurements, and document results.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, sound customer judgment, and the ability to work independently at customer sites.
• Valid driver's license and ability to meet company requirements for travel to U.S. customer locations.
• Ability to work safely at construction and operating sites, including climbing ladders, working around energized equipment under approved procedures, and lifting or moving equipment and materials as required.
Preferred Experience
• Experience with custom-manufactured air handlers or data center CRAH equipment in mission-critical environments.
• Experience with BACnet or other BMS communication protocols, controller network configuration, and point-to-point commissioning.
• Experience verifying fan-array redundancy, chilled-water valve response, sensor calibration, and air-side performance against design requirements.
• HVAC, electrical, refrigeration, or controls trade-school training, or equivalent technical education and field experience.
• EPA Section 608 certification if assigned work includes refrigerant-containing equipment.
What You Bring
• A methodical approach to troubleshooting: verify the operating conditions, use the drawings and sequence, test the system, and document what you find.
• A strong commitment to safety, quality, and complete commissioning records.
• The confidence to explain technical issues clearly and coordinate practical solutions with customers and project partners.
• A team-first attitude and willingness to coach developing technicians while continuing to learn new equipment and controls.
• Flexibility to travel and adjust to changing project schedules in a field-based role.
