Senior Software Development Engineer
About the team
Agent Software Analytics & Reporting is growing the data and analytics platform behind Zillow Pro Platform, Zillow's software for real estate professionals. We consolidate listing, showing, and market activity data from across Zillow, turn it into datasets teams can rely on, and delight agents, brokers, and teams through the products they run their business on — the Zillow Pro Listing Performance Dashboard, ShowingTime, MarketStats, Zillow Pro metrics APIs and more. Most of what the Senior Software Development Engineer builds here ends up in a report an agent shows a seller who's making decisions about their listing, one of the largest financial decisions most people ever make. A stale dataset or a rollup that's quietly off by a few percent shows up in that conversation. So correctness, freshness, and monitoring get real engineering time on this team — they aren't cleanup work we get to after the pipeline ships.
About the role
As a Senior Software Development Engineer, you will own the pipelines and real time databases behind Listing Performance Dashboard and other Zillow Pro analytics products. You’ll modernize and maintain how we operate the long-running data systems behind ShowingTime. This is hands-on work at real volume, on datasets that customers act on the same day they land.
You will get to:
- Design, build and own large-scale batch and streaming pipelines in Databricks and Spark that turn raw Zillow data sources into curated, well-modeled datasets teams across Zillow depend on.
- Raise the bar on correctness: design automated validation, reconciliation, and data quality checks so problems are caught by the pipeline rather than by a customer.
- Make the platform observable — metrics, lineage, service level objectives, and alerting that tell us a dataset is late, wrong, or degraded before anyone asks.
- Scale and tune what we run, improving the performance and cost profile of Spark jobs and the serving layer as data volume count grow.
- Take on the operational health of ShowingTime's established data systems, adding observability and headroom and replacing manual toil with automation.
- Shape the data models and contracts that downstream reporting products and analytics teams build on.
- Own your systems in production, including on-call for what you ship, and lead the follow-up work that removes whole classes of problems instead of patching single incidents.
- Use modern AI-assisted and agentic tooling to accelerate design, implementation, and operations while keeping quality high.
In addition to a competitive base salary and benefits, this position is also eligible for equity awards based on factors such as experience, performance and location.
Who you are
You're a Senior Software Development Engineer who cares as much about whether the numbers are right as whether the job finished.
- 6+ years of professional software engineering experience building and operating data pipelines in production.
- Strong programming skills in Python and/or Scala, with solid testing, code review, and debugging habits.
- Deep hands-on experience with Apache Spark and a modern lakehouse or big data platform such as Databricks.
- Experience designing both batch and streaming pipelines, including event streaming with Kafka or Flink.
- Strong SQL and data modeling skills across relational and NoSQL databases.
- Experience building on AWS with products like S3, RDS, or SQS.
- Demonstrated experience at real scale — terabytes of data or billions of records — where performance and cost are design constraints.
- A rigorous approach to data quality: automated validation, reconciliation, data contracts, and tests you actually trust.
- Experience owning systems in production, including on-call, instrumentation, and service level objectives.
- Here at Zillow – we value the experience and perspective of candidates with non-traditional backgrounds. We encourage you to apply if you have transferable skills or related experiences.
