Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY
The Project Specialist will be responsible for technical support on laboratory projects, collaborating with internal teams, external vendors, and clients. They will also drive continuous improvement by identifying, planning, and implementing process enhancements and they will contribute to business growth by communicating SGS's service offerings to prospective clients.
JOB FUNCTIONS
- Provide technical support to laboratory services projects; providing internal and external consultation with employees and customers when assigned.
- Work closely with the Project Manager, Laboratory Managers, Quality Assurance Chemists and Technicians to develop new laboratory methods in response to client needs.
- Coordination, development, analysis, and reporting of strategic laboratory testing programs.
- Work in partnership with other Laboratory personnel, and Business Development Representatives, to ensure customer satisfaction and that client deadlines are met.
- Plan and initiate procedures and systems to ensure continuous improvement of equipment and processes.
- Develop and maintain good relationships with clients and vendors.
- Projects business development - represent the business to clients, develop business opportunities, prepare scopes of work, issue proposals and coordinate project acceptance and opening.
- Verify reports, certificates and invoices to send to the customers.
- Ensure timely and accurate communication with clients by regular updates to help them meet their contractual needs and to advise them on SGS’ capabilities and limitations.
- Acts with professionalism at all times when representing the business to clients, peers and employees.
- Pursue opportunities to expand the company profile and clients relationship.
- Maintain a focus on health and safety.
- May be assigned to coordinate special or ad hoc projects.
- Extended hours may be required as well as travel to other SGS and client locations.
Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- A post-secondary education (three-year diploma) in a Science related program (Environmental Science, Chemistry or Geology,) Required
- A minimum of 1 - 2 years of experience in a laboratory setting Required
- Good knowledge and demonstrated application of best practices Required in laboratory and personnel management.
JOB COMPLEXITY
- Challenging customer requirements (technical, analytical, multi-phase project).
- High level of creativity is required in solving routine and non-routine problems.
- Technical problems or issues require the application of standards/techniques widely accepted within the profession. This includes providing technical expertise towards the development of new/revised laboratory methods to meet client and market needs. A knowledge of industry best practices is required.
- Multi-tasking is essential: data, reports, client inquiries, equipment malfunctions may all come at once.
- Ability to prioritize to maintain workflow through (TAT) and client satisfaction.
- Requires knowledge of analytical methods combined with technical experience to be able to advise clients of SGS’ capabilities or limitations and to suggest solutions.
- Provide supervision, mentorship, training, and guidance to Technician / Technologists.
- Acts with professionalism at all times when representing the business to clients, peers and employees.
- Pursue opportunities to expand the company profile and clients relationship.
ANALYTICAL THINKING/PROBLEM SOLVING
- Effectively communicate client instructions to staff and service providers in other departments.
- Prepare price quotations and budgets for clients.
- Liaise with clients and SGS managers on technical and analytical issues
- Works from written procedures, diagrams, equipment operating manuals, and/or verbal instructions.
- Provides input into the development of new laboratory methods in response to client needs.
- Initiative and independent judgment required in order to recommend modifications or changes to established methods and procedures within prescribed standards.
- When in difficulty will collaborate with other Supervisors, Group Leader/Manager, and/or Project Managers.
Additional Information
Compensation
The expected salary for this position is $50,000 to $55,000 per year. This range represents the minimum and maximum base salary we reasonably expect to pay for this role. Actual compensation within the range will depend on skills, experience, and qualifications.
