Job Description

The Shift Supervisor will act as a change agent for SOA within the operational working groups, providing peer learning support to operational leaders to embed the positive safety ownership practices.

The SOA Shift Supervisor is a dedicated site-based resource responsible for supporting the implementation of the SOA (Safety Ownership in Action) programme through training and continuous improvement activities. The role works closely with operational leaders, supervisors and crews to promote learning transfer, promoting coaching capability, reinforce safe behaviours and support sustained ownership of SOA practices.

In addition, the successful candidate will be responsible for co-designing, implementing, and evaluating training and development programs that enhance the skills, safety, and productivity of employees within the mining operation. This role ensures the workforce is equipped to meet current and future operational requirements while adhering to industry standards and regulations.

1. Safety

• Consistent application of Safety & Health principles in all discipline interactions and take personal responsibility for safety of self and others to ensure zero harm and elimination of fatalities.                                                                                                                                                         

1. Performance and Delivery 

• Act as a change agent by promoting the desired SOA behaviours, providing feedback to the working group, building awareness and understanding and influencing others.
• Conduct field verification activities to assess learning transfer and behavioural adoption.
• Serve as a subject matter expert for coaching in specific areas, such as safety procedures, equipment operation, technical skills, or compliance requirements
• Provide constructive feedback and coaching to participants to help them identify areas for improvement and reinforce operational standards and objectives.
• Inspection of ground conditions and face preparation, including taking appropriate action in the event of non-compliance to legal and management specifics
• Inspection of temporary and permanent support installations and taking appropriate action in the event of non-compliance to legal and management specifics
• Inspection of machinery, equipment and safety devices and taking appropriate action in the event of non-compliance to legal and management specifics
• Inspection of barricades, barricading off back areas, hazardous areas and abandoned workings and taking appropriate action in the event of non-compliance to legal and management specifics
• Ensure that the routing and control of mine air are consistent with legal and management specifics
• Maintain training records, logbooks, evaluation forms and programme implementation documentation.
• Support operational leadership in embedding SOA into daily work routines and management practices.
• Identify opportunities for programme improvement and recommend corrective actions.
• Support culture and behavioural change initiatives aligned to operational excellence objectives and any request from the SOA Champion.
• Align to company requirements and delivery strategy.
• Reporting /dealing with any sub-standard conditions and acts related to gases, mine air, velocities and temperatures
• Reviewing all checklists or formal controls required for working areas and operation of hazardous machinery or equipment
• Communicating information to team (shift supervisors and Mine Overseers) via reports and formal briefings, with regard to operational matters (targets, ventilation, survey, geological) and safety issue

    3. People & Teams

• Actively engage as a team member in all team processes.

    4. Compliance  

• Ensure compliance with internal and external regulatory, legislative and permitting requirements.  

Qualifications

• Grade 12
• Competent A & B
• Blasting Certificate
• Shift Supervisor Certificate
• Mine Overseer’s Certificate will be an added advantage
• Assessor & Moderator Certificate will be an added advantage
• NQF5 OD ETDP Level 5 Higher Certificate will be an added advantage
• Medical fitness certificate for Underground work

Experience

• 4-6 years’ experience as a Shift Supervisor
• 3 years relevant experience in training, facilitation, coaching or workforce capability development will be an added advantage.
• Experience in mining, industrial, operational or safety environments.
• Exposure to behavioural change, learning transfer and coaching methodologies.

Technical knowledge

• Coaching and mentoring practices.
• Training facilitation and competency development.
• Behavioural safety and human performance principles.
• Evaluation and reporting techniques.
